Ahmadinejad's Columbia Appearance Sparks Protest

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s scheduled appearance at Columbia University is fueling a debate about whether or not the academic institution should grant the contreversial leader to express his opinions.

In an interview on TV this morning he is claiming that they are neither building a nuclear bomb nor headed to war with the United States.

Well, you have to appreciate we don’t need a nuclear bomb. We don’t need that. What need do we have for a bomb? In political relations right now, the nuclear bomb is of no use. If it was useful it would have prevented the downfall of the Soviet Union.
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad

He also said that…

“It’s wrong to think that Iran and the U.S. are walking toward war. Who says so? Why should we go to war? There is no war in the offing.
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad

He has a point there about the Soviet Union but that was an entirely different issue with a different government. I do think that if we go to war it will be because we start it.

As far as his appearance at Columbia University I am all for differing viewpoints but how can we let someone speak to our students that wants to wipe Israel of the planet and claims that the holocaust never happened? Ahmadinejad claims that  Iran wants nothing mor e than peace and friendship with the United States and for most of the citizens of Iran that might be true and it may even be true for the President himself but unfortunately he is just a mouthpiece because he is not really in control of Iran. That distinction goes to the Grand Ayatollah Ali Khamenei who has the last word in all policies in Iran and also has control of the military.

Ahmadinejad is an outspoken critic of the George W. Bush Administration and supports strengthened relations between Iran and Russia, Cuba, Venezuela, Syria and the Persian Gulf states. He has supported Iran’s nuclear program declaring it is for peaceful purposes in spite of contrary demands by the United Nations Security Council to end it. He was condemned internationally for calling for Israel to be “wiped off the map,” and described the Holocaust as a myth, leading to accusations of antisemitism. In response to these criticisms, Ahmadinejad said “No, I am not anti-Jew, I respect them very much.”

While liberal educators and the U.N. General Counsel are busy playing footsy with Ahmadinejad the Supreme Leader (as he is known) is busy laying plans for the destruction of Israel because in the eyes of Iran Israel is an abomination.

He also requested that he be able to lay a wreath at Ground Zero. That request was denied by the city of New York and rightly so since Iran is one of the financial backers for many terrorist groups.

  1. Ahmadinejad Echoes the Democratic Left

On Sept. 20, 2007, 60 Minutes correspondent Scott Pelley interviewed Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in Tehran, Iran. Sounding like he was speaking from the Daily Kos and Netroots playbook, Ahmadinejad was sending a clear signal to his allies o…

  4. I never had nearly naked teachers

Playboy is far from being pornographic unless one thinks the nude female form per se is obscene, which it is not, unless you are Muslim of course. It is interesting to note that very few non-Muslim feminists bother to attack Islam for its misogynism.

  5. Columbia University Has an Opportunity to Learn a Lesson

Columbia University took a lot of heat about its invitation to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, so Columbia President Lee Bollinger needed to show that the invitation was to a real forum rather than an anti-American love-fest. Before we go on:…

  6. Columbia Prof Bashes Ahmadinejad

What pleasant surprise. Frankly, I’m relieved that Prof Bollinger hands Ahmadinejad his hatred on a silver platter. The Prof slices and dices and makes mounds and mounds of evidence that Ahmadinejad is a petty and cruel dictator I still think

  8. A day in the life of Columbia University students

This is what is happening now. There are many people who have opinions about this, but the only opinions that will matter, factually, are those in the Middle East. Did this president of a university insult many more Iranians than Ahmadinejad has done…

  9. There are no Homosexuals in Iran!

I watched Ahmadinejad’s speech at Columbia University today. Its being covered extensively over the blogs, so I will be brief. The man is smart, possibly brilliant, he is charming in the sense that a sociopath is charming, he had a Clintonesque quali…

  12. What should we do about Ahmadinejad? Let the world see the truth

I admit I was pretty incensed about Ahmadinejad and his request to visit the 9/11 ground zero site. To me that was only slightly less tacky then letting in Ladin do the same thing.

Jack Bauer Kiefer Sutherland was arrested in the wee hours of this morning on DUI charges. His apparently blew double the legal limit. This isn’t his first arrest, he’s done it before, so he’s probably looking at some jail time for this one.

  14. Fake but Accurate Depiction of Code Pink

There’s a debate going on at a sad little leftist blog about the difference between Dan Rather’s ‘fake but accurate’ news and the ‘fake but accurate’ photoshop below. Talk about parsing words, they are downright Clintonesque …. it depends on what the…
