At Least 11 People Dead After Murderous Rampage in South Alabama
Updated – The gunman was apparently 27-year-old Michael McLendon. Just as soon as I get more details I’ll get them posted.
I’ve been pretty busy at work this evening so have just been catching up on the news. This story is pretty horrific and I’m sure that if you are seeing it here you’ve already heard about the story.
From ABC News:
At least 10 people were killed Tuesday afternoon in a shooting rampage in southern Alabama by a lone gunman, according to the FBI.
Coffee County Coroner Robert Preachers told the AP that the suspect started his spree by burning down his mother’s house, where officials found her body.
Jim Stromenger of the Samson, Ala., police department said the shootings occurred in at least four separate locations in two towns. No motive is known at this time, he said.
The shooter by late afternoon moved on to Samson where he went to a private home and killed at least five people on the porch. He then shot and killed one each at two other homes, the Alabama Department of Safety said in a statement.
It is believed that the gunman, who was not immediately identified by police, then used his rifle to shoot a man and a woman at a gas station. The woman was killed and the man was wounded, the AP reported.
Samson contractor Greg McCullough said he was pumping gas at the station when the gunman opened fire, killing a woman coming out of the service station and wounding McCullough in the shoulder and arm with bullet fragments that struck his truck and the pump.
As usual, Steve Huff also has the story up. That’s where I heard about it first, received a tweet on my phone earlier today.
Apparently Reliable Metals. the plant where the gunman finally shot himself, was also his place of employment. Just as soon as I get a name or photo to put with it I’ll be sure to put it up.
