Updated – Charles Walter Nettlebeck Killed His Wife and Step-daughter With an Ax
Updated – New information at is at the bottom.
Police in the Tacoma, Washington area (Orting) have arrested a man in connection with the murder of his estranged wife and his 33-year-old stepdaughter. The man called 911 on Friday night to report that he had attacked them. Police found the two women, the mother had already died and the daughter was transported to a hospital, where she later died.
Pierce County Sheriff’s deputies suspect that the man had attacked his wife, who filed for divorce in January, and then painted semi-cryptic messages on the side of a shed such as “Living in hotel. Money running out. Nowhere to live”.
So far I don’t have a name or mug shot as formal charges have not yet been filed. I will try and update this over the next couple of days. Thanks to the Dreamin’ Demon and a reader I’ve got a picture up. One of the commenters below was also interested in seeing if this is the same Charles Nettlebeck that he knew.
Updated – It took me a little while, but I’ve found the suspect. No mug shot yet. 56-year-old Charles Walter Nettlebeck is the suspect who has been arrested. He is being held in the Pierce County Jail on charges of Murder 1 and Assault 1 with no bond. He was booked into the jail around 4am on Saturday morning. I will post more information as I get it.
Apparently the mother was a veteran King County Corrections Officer and her daughter worked for the Renton, Washington Police Department. I have read reports that say she had recently kicked her husband out of the house and that she had also filed a restraining order against him.
This is a map of the general area where the murders occurred. The house itself sits on a fairly big piece of property where they keep horses and chickens, as well as other animals.
In addition to the messages spray painted on the shed other areas of the house were spray painted as well with messages including “I love my wife” and “Sorry to my friends I could not get help”.
I do have some links to other family members MySpace pages and whatnot that really have no bearing on this so won’t be posting them. Anyone that is interested in updating the information here is more than welcome to email me and can leave it anonymously as well.
Update II – Nettlebeck was charged earlier today with two counts of aggravated murder in the first degree. He had his first appearance in court today and pleaded not guilty to the charge that he killed his wife, Barbara Nettlebeck and his step-daughter Bretta Hawkins.
Apparently he also tried to hang himself at home prior to law enforcement being called out to the house.
