Thursday night a shooting in a Gwinnett County home took the lives of 28-year-old Atania Butler, her 11-year-old daughter Jhane, 30-year-old Lakeisha Parker and 19-year-old Rico Zimmerman. Atania’s other daughter, a four-year-old was also shot and is being treated at Scottish Rite Children’s Hospital. Zimmerman’s girlfriend escaped the house and she is the one who called 911.
According to the Gwinnett County Police Department 44-year-old Richard Terrance Ringold opened fire on the people in his house but don’t know why. Police say they think that Terrance was Butler’s boyfriend. After the shooting Ringold took off but someone must have seen his car leaving because when he returned shortly after midnight last night acting like he didn’t know what was going on they handcuffed and arrested the man.
He has been charged with four counts of Murder and one count of Aggravated Assault and is being held at the Gwinnett County Detention Center with no bond.
Friends of Atania have been leaving heartfelt messages on her MySpace page all day expressing their sorrow in her and her daughter’s horrible murder. She moved to the Atlanta area from the 7th Ward, New Orleans some time after Hurricane Katrina.
I found it really sad to read the AJC story on this murder. When police arrived and knocked on the door the four-year-old answered the door covered in blood. As paramedics were cutting off her clothes to find the wound she looked around and said “My whole family is dead”.
Ringold is currently unemployed and owes money to an old landlord and most likely to others as well.
I’ll try and update this story once more information is released. I’ve emailed what may be his ex-wife asking for a short e-interview but I don’t expect any response.
