According to the Associated Press Mexico has OK’ed Cesar Laurean’s extradition.
Right in the middle of supper now but I’ll update this further this evening.
Dewey Hudson, the Onslow County District Attorney, says it will be October before Laurean is back in the U.S. Obviously Sheriff Brown’s office has not dealt very much with international extraditions which sometimes take weeks if not months. Cesar Laurean is still eligible to appeal the Mexican judge’s decision to extradite him. If he doesn’t appeal it will be a month or so before he’s returned. If he does appeal it might be sometime in 2009 if the appeal is denied.
JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina officials say a Mexican court has approved returning a Marine accused of killing a pregnant colleague to the U.S.
Onslow County Sheriff Ed Brown said Thursday he expects to have 21-year-old Cpl. Cesar Laurean in custody in about a week. But both the prosecutor and Laurean’s attorney say it may be several weeks before he returns.
Laurean is charged with first-degree murder in the slaying of Marine Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach. The 20-year-old from Vandalia, Ohio, was eight months pregnant when she was killed late last year.
Her remains were found in Laurean’s backyard near North Carolina’s Camp Lejeune where both Marines served as clerks.
Laurean was arrested in Mexico in April.
I know this guy will not be getting the death penalty since he fled to Mexico. It will be very interesting to see if he doesn’t appeal his extradition to the states. Also, I wonder will he be tried by the military or local authorities. This is really a sad case and something that could have been prevented. This guy will spend the rest of his life in Leavenworth.
