A jury convicted Burkhart on Tuesday in 11 counts of rape, 11 counts of incest and three counts of aggravated child abuse. He faces up to 270-something years in prison depending on how the sentencing goes. If they were to run concurrently he faces up to 12 years in prison for each count of rape and abuse and 6 for each count of incest. Since the girl was 17 he had to be charged with rape. Child rape carries 25 years but only covers children under 12.
His wife has also been charged with aggravated child abuse for not doing anything to stop the abuse that had been going on in the home.
Police discovered the ongoing abuse when the girl spoke to a resource officer at her high school. She told the officer that her father trained dogs and had used the same collars on her. Later on they learned that he had repeatedly raped the girl.
