I came across this story about a shooting in my community by chance today. I was off work yesterday and normally I stay pretty busy writing and listening to the local scanner but I was pretty busy and didn’t have the chance.
According to the article in the Times-Georgian Jerome Granville and Charles Wilkerson had been arguing on the phone yesterday morning. Granville called Wilkerson repeatedly and threatened him as well. Police say that Granville went to Wilkerson’s house on Otis Street about 9:30 yesterday morning and entered the home uninvited armed with a table leg.
The two men argued some more and Wilkerson shot Granville in the head. Granville is currently in critical condition.
On the surface I would say that Wilkerson had every right to shoot the guy in self-defense if he felt threatened in his own home but there are some other extenuating circumstances like Wilkerson is a convicted felon who shouldn’t have had a gun in the first place. As a matter of fact he’s been lodged in the Carroll County Jail on charges with include a parole violation hold and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
As I get more information I’ll update this, hopefully with a mug shot as well. What really concerns me is that not only is this about a half mile from my house but it is literally across the street from the Elementary School where my daughter attends. I have yet to hear about a lockdown at the school (which is what should have happened) or anything else. Normally I will also get text "flashes" on any crime in my area but the Temple PD has yet to send anything out.
Update – It is only rumor but I heard earlier today that Granville was life-flighted to Atlanta and has possibly passed away. I will try and verify that when I get home from work.
