Just stopped by to see the Grouchy Old Cripple and got to this short post about Larry Craig. Republicans all over the U.S. are urging him to step down and get the hell out of the limelight yet the Democrats are still supporting the bribe-taking scumbag William Jefferson. What’s up with that?

I just ran across this over at CNN as well as a couple of other news outlets. Apparently an explosion caused a fire that is burning at least two buildings in Miami. Four children and one fire fighter have been injured in the fire and all have been transported to the hospital for treatment.

Is it just me or is the site just dragging to load today, even worse than usual? I am doing several different things here on my end so I can’t be sure that it’s my site or not. Either way I have found a way to export my templates from this site with minimal effort and hopefully will be on the new MT installation within the week. If that doesn’t speed things up then I will start to look for alternatives to my host. I am tired of it taking forever to rebuild the blog when I post and it still takes forever to comment, to the point where most people end up hitting the post button two or three times duplicating comments. Having to clean them up is a PITA.

I came across this site at http://www.mywriterscircle.com/ pretty recently. I certainly don’t consider myself a serious author of any kind, don’t get me wrong, but there is a ton of information over at My Writer’s Circle for professional authors as well as dumb old bloggers like myself. It’s a place to chat and get together with other writers and pick their brains for questions about grammar, storylines and really anything that might have to do with writing. You can post samples of your writing for critique (but be aware that you will get critiqued!), get ideas for new stories or articles as well as poetry and screenplays.

Apparently the forum has been online for two years now and I have never been there. I suppose with all of the millions of web sites out there that is no mean fete but with all the message board traffic they have I would think it be be a lot more well known than it is.

As I mentioned above one of the boards is there so that you can have your work critiqued and judge other peoples stories as well. There is quite a bit of amateurish fluff, stuff that I would write but I did come across this little gem. I thought it was pretty good anyway. Go check it out and tell me what you think.

That’s exactly what my computer has done. Crashed and burned. It rebooted in the middle of posting earlier, thus the entry without a title. I am in the process of moving about 80 GB of music onto a secondary hard drive right now prior to ghosting my main partition so that’s pretty much it for tonight unless I get it done quicker than I think I will.

Need to go find that Ghost floppy, I know it’s around here somewhere…

I have just recently started to use a plugin called Visitor Stats for Movabletype 4.0. The javascript sits right in the header of the site and loads before anything else and seems to be doing a pretty good job of tracking everything here. It matches AWStats almost perfectly and has been giving me a pretty good idea of who is coming and when. The problem is that right now it isn’t compatible with dynamic publishing so the last blog that I will move over to the new installation of MT will be this one.

There is supposed to be a version coming out that will be compatible, hopefully soon. At that point I will move the site. I may go ahead next week and prepare everything for the move though so that when I do switch it will be that much easier. I am looking forward to having this site speed up even if it’s just the tiniest bit.

CNN is posting breaking news that Michael Vick has been suspended indefinitely, without pay. From Commissioner Goodell’s letter to Michael Vick (posted on the NFL website):

» “Your admitted conduct was not only illegal, but also cruel and reprehensible. Your team, the NFL, and NFL fans have all been hurt by your actions.”

» “Your plea agreement and the plea agreements of your co-defendants also demonstrate your significant involvement in illegal gambling. Even if you personally did not place bets, as you contend, your actions in funding the betting and your association with illegal gambling both violate the terms of your NFL Player Contract and expose you to corrupting influences in derogation of one of the most fundamental responsibilities of an NFL player.”

» “You have engaged in conduct detrimental to the welfare of the NFL and have violated the league’s Personal Conduct Policy.”

» “I will review the status of your suspension following the conclusion of the legal proceedings. As part of that review, I will take into account a number of factors, including the resolution of any other charges that may be brought against you, whether in Surry County, Virginia, or other jurisdictions, your conduct going forward, the specifics of the sentence imposed by Judge Hudson and any related findings he might make, and the extent to which you are truthful and cooperative with law enforcement and league staff who are investigating these matters.”

» “I have advised the Falcons that, with my decision today, they are no longer prohibited from acting and are now free to assert any claims or remedies available to them under the Collective Bargaining Agreement or your NFL Player Contract.”

Big news day, huh? I am glad to hear that the NFL is sticking by it’s morals and rules on this one.

After the Cuban dictator’s 81st birthday on August 13th it was reported that his health has taken a turn for the worse and the Fidel Deathwatch is on again. Woo hoo! Perhaps this time it will turn out to be a bit more than rumors. There haven’t been any conifmations of it, but apparently denials are already coming out about his death, so who know?

Supposedly South Florida Police departments are calling in for reinforcements before any official announcement is made.

Even Val Prieto made an announcement earlier. and then came back on saying that nothing is official yet.

Update 5:35 PM EST – Val at Babalu Blog is reporting that although no announcements have been made several sources in different branches of the government are verifying that the story is true. As soon as I get confirmation (TV,Email,CNN) I will post it (if I am not too drunk)

I don’t get the opportunity to play many games, at least not here lately. I have my favorite stand-bys that I usually play with it’s nice to find a new one every now and then. When I do I like to support smaller and independent developers such as Phelios games. Phelios is an independent developer of Windows and Mac Games that you can find at their web site. My biggest issue with thinking about switching to a Mac or Linux desktop is the lack of games designed for those operating systems.

Apparently there are some developers trying to remedy this and Mac games are starting to be a bit more readily available, particularly now that you can run the Mac OS on i386 hardware. I have always like RPG games, and Phelios sells those as well so go check them out when you get the chance.

John Couey was sentenced to death today for the 2005 kidnapping, rape and murder of Jessica Lunsford. I had sent a twitter post when I heard but since it isn’t up yet I though I would go ahead and write a bit about it. At the time this horrible incident happened back in 2005 I posted a couple of times on the subject and was just disgusted and awed that this sick bastard could do something like this.

Justice has prevailed in the case and after an hour of deliberation a jury recommended 10-2 that Couey receive the death penalty. He is a previously convicted sex offender with a 30 year criminal history that told the police at one point that he would do it again.

In a recorded conversation between Couey and his Aunt he said he knew he was going to be given the death penalty.

About the only thing that could make this better is if her were to be made to suffer as his victim did before he is killed.

Now that I have seen Elisson’s ideas for his new kitchen setup I have been hankering to redo ours. Alas, that’s going to have to wait. I would however like to get the master bathroom done at some point in the near future. The wife wants to tile and paint it anyway, so we might as well redo the countertops as well and replace them with granite.

I’ve looked around at several different places and I must say that I am impressed with the level of service and professionalism at All Granite and Marble. Apparently quite a bit of their appeal is the process that they go through versus what a lot of other companies do.

All Granite was the third shop in the country to start using computer numerically controlled machinery for the fabrication of granite countertops and this speeds the project up immensely and also improves the quality of the finished product. It has to do with the fact that since the machines are computer controlled they get the exact cut you need and since they use water the edges are much more smooth and less dull than other competitors. They have five of the machines,so can get it done in a timely manner.

They also have a much faster turnaround time than most other companies as well. Since there is no middle man, they take three days from the time of templating your cabinets until they are installed. Since quite a few companies take anywhere from two weeks to two months and leave you without cabinets this is a pretty darn big deal.

They also sell tools and granite maintenance and care products as well. One of the things I learned from a friend of my a few years ago is that you need to keep granite cleaner on hand as well in order to keep it looking beautiful. One thing that he had done that was really exciting to me is that he had his touchscreen home automation interface mounted directly into his granite countertop in the bar. It was a very nice finished project. Being so much into home automation as I am this was neat.

Here is what I would love to put in the bathroom…

Changing our countertops in the bathroom would make all the difference in the world as to how they look and feel. Our guest bath is deisgned with an oriental motif and something along these lines would also look great in there as well.

I wish I knew what was going on. The sites are so slow it’s not even funny. I don’t know if I have hit my hosts speed limit or what. I had to buy another ten gigs of bandwidth yesterday so that my site wouldn’t run out before the end of the month. I don’t seem to be getting a ton a spam, but I have no idea how to check and see.

Maybe I will log into AWStats later and see what’s going on. I’m not even getting nearly the traffic that I was when the Harry Potter book came out so I know that isn’t the problem.

As I thought, it was around nine when I got home tonight. The meeting lasted most of the evening but we actually got finished earlier than we did last week. I had planned on coming home and writing a bit, but I think I will skip that tonight. I will probably schedule some news posts tomorrow when I wake up and may write a bit if I can awaken myself on time.

    SSgt. John T. Self
29 years old from Pontotoc, Mississippi

    May 14, 2007

A kindhearted patriot. That’s how SSgt. John Self was described by those who knew him. “John was a good boy, a good boy who loved his country and who loved Christ and for that he’ll move on to a better place,” said Laron Self, Sgt. Self’s grandfather, fighting back tears.
SSgt. Self was killed, and three other airmen wounded, when an IED hit the Humvee they were traveling in while on his 79th patrol in Baghdad, Iraq. “John volunteered for this deployment while he was deployed to (Southwest Asia),” said Chief Master Sgt. Keith Morris, 314th SFS security forces manager. “We discussed this deployment via e-mail. He said he made his decision to deploy again to gain experience.”
“He could always find the humor in anything regardless of the situation,” said Senior Airman Daniel Hunsperger, a member of Self’s fire team. “He believed in everything he did. This was obvious to us after learning he had only spent two weeks home between his last deployment and volunteering for this one.”
On May 23, SSgt. Self was laid to rest with a crowd of hundreds to pay their respects. People lined both sides of the highway for more than 5 miles waving flags as the hundred-car procession traveled to the burial. Shouts of, “We love you John,” and “Thank you, John, could be heard as the train of cars passed by. “That’s a hero,” Susan Chambers, one of the many mourners, said to her son as she pointed at Self’s casket.

These brave men and women sacrifice so much in their lives so that others may enjoy the freedoms we get to enjoy everyday. For that, I am proud to call them Hero.

  • It’s been quite some time since I’ve had the chance to write a review on another blog. Mostly I’ve been hit up for other types of sites, mainly businesses looking for linkage. That’s part of what Random Encounters of We is looking for I am sure, but they also asked for an honest review of the site itself, so here it is. I’ve been trying to decide for several days now what to write. With some of the stuff it’s real easy because I can just say “so and so has a product and it might be a good idea for you to look at” and feel OK because I never said I use it (unless I have) but with another blogger I want to give an honest review and maybe we both can learn something from it.

Bear in mind I know almost nothing about designing blog templates and it was like ripping teeth out of my head to come up with the design I am using and it was just adapted from a normal web site with tables and a bit of embellishment on my part. Not only that but my tastes seem to be a bit different so you have to take it with a grain of salt, but I hate the generic blogger templates, which is what it looks like they are using to me. I don’t like the bright green at all. It makes me want to rip my eyeballs out of my skull, but as I said, this is coming from a guy that has bright orange Halloween text on a black background. Opinions. We all heave ‘em, er..have them.

The site has been around for about ten months and obviously judging from the page rank, has some return visitors and a few links to it. I read through about a month’s archives on the front end and on the back end to get a general idea about the blog and who ‘we’ are. They also participate in paid blogging, as I do. One of the things I noticed is what I will do a lot of times when I really don’t have a lot to say and am just trying to make a couple of bucks…

    paid post

    paid post.

Some of the most recent entries sound like they are just creating filler. Maybe it takes one to know one because I have days where I will post 20 or 30 entries and maybe one comes from the heart. I only had to go back a couple of pages in the archives though to find a recent entry that sounded like she knew what she was talking about and enjoyed writing it. It’s a post on finances and debt entitled ‘Past, Present and Future of Your Money‘. It was an enjoyable post and I felt like I could learn something reading more of this stuff.

One of the biggest ways to be successful as a blogger (as if I really know this stuff) is to write about what you know and know about what you write. You can always tell when I have enjoyed writing about something here, there is usually plenty of crassness and foul language and gnashing of teeth. Over at Random Encounters of We it’s about money and the family.

They also run a games blog called Random Games as well that you might be interested in checking out.

Anyway, the bottom line is that I like the blog, but I think I would develop more posts about things that make you go hmmm…and redo or have someone else redo the template. There are tons of blogger templates and plugins out there for free that I have seen.

Damn, this is only about 15 or 20 miles from my house. Apparently the woman ran out of gas and Reggie Brown Hairston picked her up about 5am and raped her. The police have caught him in an industrial area. There haven’t been any other details released as far as I know, so I’m not sure why he wasn’t in his car or what.

String the bastard up if he’s guilty.
