I just finished watching this with the girls. I have never read the book and although I was a very avid reader as a child, never even heard of it before until the movie came out and since then have heard from several people “oh, that was my favorite book”. Whatever. I am a pretty big sci-fi/fantasy fan and don’t think I ever knew anyone as a child that read it either.
OK, just looked it up and it came out when I was about eleven and by that time I was pretty much beyond the newberry stuff and reading Heinlein, Farmer, and Foster which might explain why I had never heard of it.
I may actually have to get hold of the book and read it after having seen the movie. It was actually pretty good. I love horror movies. I personally try to stick to horror and action. Shoot-em-up type stuff. It’s because they are good for a rush of adrenaline and a laugh.
And they don’t make you cry. It doesn’t take much to get me weeping in a damned old sappy movie, and this one did the trick. By the end I was blubbering like a fucking baby. Thus the fact that I don’t go see shit like this in the theater.
Anyhow, it was a pretty good story but like I said, not at all what I expected.
This post and your last one made me realize: you and I are far more alike than I ever knew.
I even cried during Star Wars Episode III.
I even cry in sappy cartoons. That’s why I hate television. Can’t watch when the wife is around as she makes fun of me 🙂
