On Monday, Lt. Michael P. Murphy was posthumously awarded the Medal Of Honor. His father was the one who accepted the award. Lt. Murphy will receive the award for his extraordinary, selfless heroism and steadfast courage while leading a four-man, special reconnaissance mission deep behind enemy lines east of Asadabad in the Hindu Kush of Afghanistan June 27 to 28, 2005 “We are thrilled by the President’s announcement today, especially because there is now a public recognition of what we knew all along about Michael’s loyalty, devotion and sacrifice to his friends, family, country, and especially his SEAL teammates,” the Murphy family said in a statement released earlier in the month. “The honor is not just about Michael, it is about his teammates and those who lost their lives that same day.” Murphy was the officer-in-charge of the SEAL element, which was tasked with locating a high- level Taliban militia leader to provide intelligence for a follow-on mission to capture or destroy the local leadership and disrupt enemy activity. Taliban sympathizers discovered the SEAL unit and immediately revealed their position to Taliban fighters. The element was besieged on a mountaintop by scores of enemy fighters. The firefight that ensued pushed the element farther into enemy territory and left all four SEALs wounded. The SEALs fought with everything they had. despite being at a tactical disadvantage and outnumbered more than four to one. Understanding the gravity of the situation and his responsibility to his men, Murphy, already wounded, deliberately and unhesitatingly moved from cover into the open where he took and returned fire while transmitting a call for help for his beleaguered teammates. Shot through the back while radioing for help, Murphy completed his transmission while returning fire. The call ultimately led to the rescue of one severely wounded team member, Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class Marcus Luttrell, and the recovery of the remains of Murphy and Gunner’s Mate 2nd Class (SEAL) Danny Dietz and Sonar Technician 2nd Class (SEAL) Matthew Axelson. Eight more SEALs and eight Army “Nightstalker” special operations personnel comprising the initial reinforcement also lost their lives when their helicopter was shot down before they could engage the enemy. Murphy was also inducted into the Hall of Heroes at the Pentagon during a ceremony yesterday. His name was engraved beside the names of some 3,400 other service members who have also been awarded the nation’s highest honor.

One of my favorite albums by Alice Cooper is definitely his first, Love it to Death. Back in 1971 the band had not fully gotten into the dark gothic shows that would come along a few years later but you can already see the creepiness starting to show.

Paradise
I am still busting a gut to go to Hawaii with the wife at some point in the next couple of years. We’ve been all over the southeast and I have seen several other areas of the country but I would love to get some Hawaiian vacation information and start saving for the trip. Up until 2005 we had never been anywhere without the kids. Even during our honeymoon the wife was pregnant with out first child so when we took a weekend and flew down to New Orleans it was great. I would love to be able to go to Kauai and spend at least a week just relaxing and taking in the scenery.
The Federal Government along with the State of Hawaii has been making a huge effort over the last few years to clean up the state after millions of tourists and now it’s even more beautiful than ever. Hawaiian Beach Rentals has some really good prices on Kauai vacation rentals that are almost a steal.
My only issues with going to Hawaii are the fact that I am not very good at flying and I would probably need a sedative before we left just so that I could fly comfortably. As I get older the fear gets worse, so I can either suck it up and deal with flying or spend a couple of extra weeks driving out west and then taking a cruise to the islands, which is not necessarily a bad thing I suppose. The main thing about that is actually getting the time off of work to spend doing something like that. I would most likely have to take an entire year’s worth of vacations all at once in order to do something like that.
Wordless Wednesday Halloween Edition
Changes at Work…
One of the changes in the new Health Codes for the state of Georgia include not being able to have fingernails, not that it bothers me, as well as wearing no jewelry on your hands or arms other than a plain gold wedding band. It’s to help cut down on transmission of food poisoning. Even if you wash your hands regularly germs get on jewelry or can be trapped between watch bands and the skin as well. It kind of sucks because it means I have stopped wearing my watch altogether. I like my Mickey Mouse watch particularly, although lately I have had my eyes on a Lange Sohne like this one.
As often as I work it’s almost foolish for me to get another watch now. Luckily I always have my cell phone with me and I can check the time from it.
Magic Suite
I posted about the forthcoming suite for Object Desktop subscribers called Magic back in the middle of the month and I just realized that I had not posted anything else. It was released and I switched from my spooky desktop to Magic immediately. I really like the skin. It’s bright without being too bright and all of the fonts show up great, which was an issue in the dark Halloween skin I was using at the time. Here’s what it looks like on my desktop.
Another Long One…
I ended up spending several hours this afternoon in a P&L meeting. Got home about six and had a bit. I have about an hour or so before I go pick up one of my cooks and take him into work. My SVP is going to be in my stores tomorrow and as a result I will most likely be in the nastiest one cleaning until at least midnight. Luckily I am off the next two days so I only have to deal with the preparation and not the actual visit, but I will have to deal with the aftermath.
Time to go out for a smoke. I don’t have anything particularly useful to post right now anyway. Being as how I am off the next couple of days I am sure I will have plenty of posts up.
