Gary Michael Hilton pleaded guilty today in the death of Meredith Emerson on the North Georgia Mountains. A plea agreement was signed earlier today and he was quickly sentenced to life in prison without parole.

It is still entirely possible that should he be tried in Florida for the disappearance of a woman there he could face the death penalty, which is what I am assuming he was trying to avoid by entering a guilty plea in court today in Dawson County.
Hilton attended the hearing today in an orange county jail jumpsuit and a bulletproof vest.

Natalee Holloway Updates toward the bottom of the entry

Just received a breaking news alert from CNN. Investigators in Aruba are looking at some new evidence that has been provided by Peter R. de Vries, a Dutch reporter. I posted about de Vries earlier this month but really didn’t go into the report much. He along with Joran van Der Sloot were on the Dutch TV show Pauw & Witteman earlier in the month and Joran lost his temper and threw wine at the reporter on camera after being confronted with his lies. If you haven’t seen the wine incident yet, this is the part of the show where Joran throws it in his face.

7:13 p.m. – Now CNN has reported that the office of the prosecutor in Aruba has intensified it’s investigation of the case of Natalee Holloway after having received the information from Dutch crime reporter Peter R. de Vries. They are stating that the information may help considerably in the solution of the mystery of Natalee’s disappearance and assumed death. The statement does not say what the information is. Sound like an all too familiar situation? If so it’s because that’s the same line of crap we heard last fall from the prosecutor’s office who ended up dropping the case at the end of the year because they didn’t have enough evidence.

Peter R. DeVries Apparently Joran has pissed off the wrong person. According to the report the information may help resolve exactly what happened to Natalee Holloway during a 2005 graduation trip to Aruba during which she disappeared after spending time with van Der Sloot.

Prosecutors had to dismiss their case late last month after they finally figured out that they didn’t have enough evidence and information to prosecute van Der Sloot or the Kalpoe brothers. Perhaps whatever it is that de Vries has turned over to police will be enough this time.

He has had at least a couple of positive findings in the past. DeVries tracked down the Heineken-kidnapper Frans Meijer in Paraguay and has had other achievements as well.

7:30 p.m. I don’t know how true this is but go read Joran Did It! and see what you think. Here is Peter R. de Vries home page. The headline on his site (click the American flag for English version) states that he has "solved the crime!" Apparently he has conducted an undercover camera operation and turned the results over to the Aruban prosecutor.

de Vries has put out a press release which you can get to here. Beth Twitty is now in the Netherlands and has screened portions of the video and apparently Beth reacted extremely shocked by what she saw along with the certain news that her daughter is indeed dead.

9:28 p.m. The AP released this video earlier this evening:

Updated – Brianna Denison’s Body Found!

It was a pretty long day at work and I have to go back soon so I thought I would just post a bunch of the different headlines I found interesting tonight. Here are a few:

Mother Defends Dog After Attack On Son – A two year old in Australia was bitten on the face by the family dog. The mother has vowed to keep the dog, blaming the attack on the child. Apparently he was pulling the dog’s ears repeatedly after his mother told him not too.

I can relate to this and think it was right for the police to leave it up to the owner. I had this very thing happen to me as a toddler. My grandmother had an old poodle and if there was ever a dog that needed it’s ears pulled, it’s a nasty old poodle. I was told several times to leave the dog alone or I would get bit, I kept pulling it’s ears and I got bit on the side of the head, ending up with butterfly stitches. Sometimes kids have to learn the hard way. I hate that the child in the news story will end up with scars but it doesn’t change anything.

Perhaps the cooks at this Slovenian hospital have been reading some of Velociman’s recent bloggage, leading to Human Tongue ‘Accidentally’ Served Up In Hospital. Damn but that is just nasty. I can barely stomach chicken as it is. That would be sure to put me off of it for life.

Body Parts Found in Eight Bags Along Interstate 80 in northeastern Pennsylvania. Authorities believe that the parts all belong to the same woman whose head was found in one of the bags. As of yet she has not been identified.

Dog the Bounty Hunter Won’t Face Charges in Mexico. I like Dog but don’t watch the show very often due to the fact that I find his wife extremely irritating and too much like 90% of my employees to stand when I’m not at work. Good news for Dog though after he did the right thing by capturing serial rapist Andrew Luster. Maybe Dog and the guys could find Cesar Laurean since the U.S. and Mexican authorities damn sure don’t seem to be having too much luck.

And it goes on. and on. and on. It will never stop. An inquest in the Bahamas is probing the death of Daniel Smith, son of Anna Nicole Smith. So far they don’t think that any foul behavior was involved in his death but if the jury were to find evidence that points to any wrong doing they can recommend criminal charges be brought. It’s weird because I was just watching an episode of Law & Order the other night that was quite obviously based on the deaths of Daniel and Anna Nicole.

Rudy Giuliani is finally dropping out of the race and has endorsed Senator John McCain and John Edwards has dropped out of the Democratic side of things but is not endorsing anyone so far.

Ralph Nader is talking about running again and while I think he is a moron I like what he says about the accusations that he spoiled the 2000 election for Al Gore: “Political bigotry will be the label on anybody who uses the word ‘spoiler,’ he said. “Because ‘spoiler’ means minor candidates are second class citizens. Either we have an equal right to run for election, or we are spoilers for each other trying to get each other’s votes.” You know it dude.

Some Catholics are getting their panties all in a wad over a fitness club ad that shows some nuns sketching a naked man. As someone married in to a Catholic family, lighten the fuck up.

There aren’t any new leads in the Brianna Denison search and the search efforts were somewhat shortened today because of snow and high winds.

Two international search groups have joined the effort to find 19-year-old Brianna Denison. Police believe the college student was abducted by a sexual predator from a friend’s home a week and a half ago.

Updated – Brianna Denison’s Body Found!
Updated 2-2-08 – America’s Most Wanted will be featuring the Brianna Denison case tonight at 9 p.m. in an effort to bring her home.
Police have also released a composite sketch of what the man may look like. You can see it over at ABC News on the web. Police are calling the man a serial rapist and saying that he may be responsible for four attacks now.

Update 2-1-08: The Washoe County crime lab has established a link between the Denison case and the sexual assault in December as well as another one in the area in November 2007.

The Reno Gazette-Journal has been an invaluable source of information on the Brianna Denison case over the last few days. Here are some facts about the suspect:
    # White male, 28-40 years old.
    # Long face with a square chin, facial hair about a quarter to a half an inch long below his chin that was soft and not prickly like stubble; brown hair; shaved pubic area.
    # Slightly taller than 5-foot-6
    # Firm stomach with an “innie” belly button.
    # Strong but not overly muscular
    # No accent when he spoke
    # No alcohol or cigarettes on his breath; no cologne
    # He wore a red short-sleeve shirt of a jersey material described as silk/nylon or polyester, with a medium blue neckline and possible embroidery on the upper left breast area. He wore a shirt underneath extended to his wrists.
    # He wore smooth pants with an elastic waist similar to basketball warmups.
    # An extended cab pickup or sport-utility vehicle with a dome light above the windshield and a step to get inside.
    # Floor-mounted, skinny console that opens in front. The LED read-out on the radio was blue and red, the vehicle had cloth seats and an automatic transmission.
    # A baby shoe was on the front seat floor board, and white pieces of paper about eight and one half by 11 inches with typing on them were on the floorboard of the front seat.
    # Anyone with information can reach the Reno police hot line at 745-3521, detectives at 334-2115 or Secret Witness at 322-4900.
    # The family is offering a $100,000 reward for information. Secret Witness is offering a $2,500 reward for anonymous tips that lead to an arrest and prosecution.
    # About 5 p.m. Nov. 13, a 21-year-old UNR student was walking to her home and was in the parking lot of her apartment complex in the 400 block of College Drive when a man grabbed her and fondled her. He ran away after she kicked him and screamed.
    # About 2 a.m., Dec. 16, a 22-year-old UNR student was walking to her apartment in the 1400 block of North Virginia Street when a man grabbed her from behind and rendered her unconscious. She woke up inside his pickup and was forced to commit a sexual act on him before he drove her home.
Head over to the Reno Gazette-Journal for more information as well as online chat about the case.
This video was released by CBS this morning…

I can certainly see why students in the area are still worried. Police are concerned that if not caught, the kidnapper will strike again.
CBS news is reporting a break in the case of missing Brianna Denison and according to the blurb that was attached to the video they are closing in on a suspect. Julie Chen spoke with Brianna’s mother, grandfather and Commander Ron Holladay of the Reno Police Department.

In reality it doesn’t seem to be much more information than I presented quickly last night. They do seem to have a better description, provided by one of the other sexual assault victims, but shouldn’t they have already had this information from December?
There’s nothing new over at the Reno Gazette-Journal other than this story about two volunteer groups helping out in the search for Brianna. They have been right on top of the story and as soon as there is another break in the case I would expect to see it here.
I also came across this video from the Associated Press which gives a general description of the suspect that Police are looking for.

Updated 2-2-08 According to the article below, the family and friends will finally be saying goodbye to Maria Lauterbach and her unborn child at a funeral today in Ohio.

This video from the Associated Press goes a bit into the story.

CNN Finally has an update on this as well.

The grand jury indictments that I wrote about last week allege the Cesar Laurean forcibly stole money from Maria Lauterbach’s bank account, killed her and then used her ATM card again.

Apparently Laurean’s full name is Cesar Armando Laurean-Ramirez. I had not picked that up from any of my previous reading about it. Anyway, the Department of Justice is on the lookout…

Mexico has finally issued a warrant for Cesar Laurean, now a week after he was reported sighted. The warrant authorizes the Mexican police to follow leads and to arrest Laurean id found.

Interpol hasn’t yet actually published the ‘red notice’ but once it does it will be accessible by 186 different member countries in four different languages.

Updated – Brianna Denison’s Body Found!

There is new DNA evidence which links the disappearance of Brianna Denison in Nevada to another sexual assault and kidnapping.

Reno Police are saying that the suspect they are most likely looking for is white, in his mid-thirties, drives a truck or SUV, has facial hair and is in good shape.

Police are saying that the DNA links the disappearance of Denison and the December assault of a college student in the area and leads them to believe that a sole attacker was responsible for both cases.

Police believe that the man lives in the area or knows the campus well and are asking for help from anyone that may have seen someone acting suspiciously or perhaps their behavior has changed radically over the last few weeks.

assaults This map from the Reno Gazette-Journal shows the locations of the abductions that might be related to this case over the last three months.

During the kidnapping on December 16th the suspect knocked the 22-year-old student unconscious, made her perform a sex act on him, and then drove her back to her apartment.

According to the police his DNA profile does not yet match any of the convicted offenders entered into the national DNA database, but apparently scientists have been complaining that the database is severely backlogged. Just how behind they are I am not sure.

They are saying now that the fluid found on Brianna’s pillow was her blood and that they also found her attacker’s DNA at the scene. They are saying that the pillow could have been used to restrain or smother her.

Late last week a body was located in an industrial area of Chicago, Illinois and police as well as the media were speculating that this might be Stacy Peterson, who has been missing since October 28th 2007. According to CNN, Chicago police spokeswoman Monique Bond announced that the body is not that of Stacy Peterson.

The Illinois State Police named Peterson’s husband Drew Peterson, an ex-cop, a suspect in the disappearance and are investigating whether he removed a blue plastic container from his house the night before his wife was reported missing.

Police are also re-examining the death of Peterson’s third wife, Kathleen Savio, who was found dead in a bathtub in 2004.

Earlier this month Meredith Emerson’s family and friends held a memorial service in Athens, Georgia where she attended college. It gave her friends the chance to say goodbye and offer a bit of closure for them.

Yesterday her family and two hundred of her friends held a memorial service in Boulder Colorado where they recalled her as a "beautiful, witty, clever woman with a contagious laugh".

As I posted in several other entries Emerson was kidnapped on New Years day in Vogel State park while she was hiking Blood Mountain. Police found her seven days later with the help of Gary Michael Hilton, who has been charged with her beating and decapitation.

Hilton could also face charges in the death of Cheryl Hodges Dunlap, who was found dead in a national forest in Florida. The State Attorney, Willie Meggs, says he has enough evidence to pursue charges but has not yet said whether or not they will charge him.

In a move that should surprise no one, a grand jury indicted Marine Corporal Cesar Laurean for first-degree murder yesterday along with various other crimes such as ATM card theft, attempted card theft, fraud and robbery with a dangerous weapon. The initial findings from the second autopsy are showing that Maria Lauterbach’s baby was not born before it died and under North Carolina law the killing of an unborn child is not illegal, so he won’t be charged with two deaths. The military is still conducting tests though, to see if the baby’s lungs contain oxygen. If any is found it would mean that the baby took a breath and would establish life.

North Carolina Authorities say that they are processing paperwork to ask Mexican officials help them find and detain missing Marine and murder suspect Cesar Laurean so that he can be extradited to the United States.

Updated – Brianna Denison’s Body Found!

It’s got to be pretty frustrating for everyone concerned out in Reno right now. Brianna Denison disappeared five days ago and right now they have very little evidence and few leads as to her whereabouts.

Police did say yesterday that they planned to interview about 100 registered sex offenders that live within a mile of the home where she vanished on Sunday as a routine part of the investigation.

Police are also saying that the two attacks late in the year on University of Nevada at Reno students don’t appear to be related to Denison’s disappearance but they are not ruling out the possibility.

Stuff like this just makes my heart wrench just thinking about the little kid hanging out with her dead mom for three days.

According to Hammett Shanta had been struggling with Nausea and had been to her clinic in St. Paul and to the emergency room as well. They had given her medication for vomiting because she was not able to keep anything down. She had also been on the phone with telling a nurse that she had been throwing up blood.

When the girls was found she was covered with her mother’s blood where she had been lying with her mother sleeping.

Her home phone was out of service and apparently the only other option was her cell phone, which was out of minutes. Don’t people know that cell phones will dial 911 whether you have minutes or not? The cell providers are obligated to put calls through to 911.

Updated – Brianna Denison’s Body Found!

1-24-2008 – Thus far there doesn’t seem to be much progress in the search for Brianna Denison but her family has not lost hope and vows to keep that hope alive.

So far along with the Reno Police and FBI, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and the University of Nevada Reno police department has joined the investigation team.
The family has also hired two private investigators and is seeking psychics experienced with missing persons cases. They want to make sure and not rule out any options or leave any stone unturned, no matter how foolish it may seem. I would feel the same way were it one of my children.
It has been four days since Brianna’s disappearance and every day that goes by increases the unlikeliness that she will be found alive.
The last communication with Brianna was in a text message that she sent to her boyfriend in Oregon. He has been cleared as a suspect. I have not yet found out what was in the text message.
The ‘person of interest’ that was driving the Suburban has come forward voluntarily and the police have eliminated him as a suspect.
One thing that keeps coming to my mind is that there have been one kidnapping and two sexual assaults within about three blocks of the area where Brianna disappeared. So far the police are reporting that they are not related but they also happened at around the same time of night and have yet to be solved, so how the heck do they know if the crimes are related or not?
According to CNN there are about 1700 convicted sex offenders living in the county and each of them will be contacted and interviewed. 1700? Damn. As a ,matter of fact there were something like 100 registered offenders withing a one mile area of the house.

Updated 1-23-08 9:45 p.m. Police are suspecting foul play in the disappearance of Brianna Denison and a kidnapping investigation is now underway in the Reno area.

The AP is also reporting that students at the University of Nevada at Reno are concerned about their own safety in the wake of Brianna’s kidnapping

Brianna Denison, 19, was last seen around 4 a.m. Sunday morning when she went to sleep at her friend’s house near the University of Nevada, Reno. As of right now police are treating the case as a kidnapping.

The FBI has joined the search and the Reno Gazette-Journal has this article up:

Reno police detectives have been in contact with local Federal Bureau of Investigation agents since Brianna Denison’s disappearance Sunday and said the FBI has opened its own criminal case and assigned an agent to work with the Reno Police Department. Denison was reported missing Sunday by a friend with whom she was spending the night. Denison is described as white, about 5 feet tall with long dark brown hair and blue eyes and weighing about 98 pounds. She was last seen wearing pink sweatpants and a white tank-top shirt. While a brown stuff bear with white and multi-colored balloons on the belly and about 24-inches tall was missing from the area where she was sleeping, her cell phone, purse and clothing, including two pairs of shoes had not been disturbed.

You can read more of their complete story at the link.

There are several different reasons that they are considering this a kidnapping rather than just a disappearance. They include the fact that there is a spot of what is suspected to be blood on the pillow she was using, her clothes, cellphone and purse remained at the house, sbriannahe was sleeping on a couch just inches away from an unlocked glass door (anyone looking inside would have seen her), a stuffed bear that her friend gave her to support the pillow is missing, she was due back in class today.

Brianna has been described by friends and family as being a responsible, good girl and her family is  frantically awaiting word that she’s OK.

There is a 24 hour tipline available if you have information pertaining to Brianna’s disappearance at 775-745-3521

Police are looking for the driver of a tan or light brown SUV, possibly a Suburban. The driver is approximately 45 and of Latin origin. He is not a suspect but is being sought as a person of interest that may have seen something. He was seen in the parking lot of the Sands Regency and dropped a friend off at the house where Denison was staying.

Brianna Denison is described as being 5-feet tall, 98 pounds with long brown hair and blue eyes. Her Facebook Profile is here, or at least one created to help find her. I did come across her profile earlier today and it didn’t show much publicly but this one does.  OK, I just looked in my history and the link you have their is for a Facebook Group called Find Bri. Go join if you want to help out.

    From the Associated Press:

RENO, Nev. (AP) — Investigators went door to door Tuesday searching for a 19-year-old college student who they believe was kidnapped from a friend’s home over the weekend. Brianna Denison was last seen around 4 a.m. Sunday when she went to sleep on her friend’s couch after a night of partying. She slept near an unlocked glass door and used a 2-foot-tall teddy bear as an extra pillow, police said. When the friend awoke, Denison and the teddy bear were gone. Her purse, cell phone and clothes, including two pairs of shoes, were undisturbed, police said. “We have not come up with any other clues, any of the items or anything that would lead us to Brianna at this time,” police Lt. Ron Holladay. Detectives were awaiting test results on whether a stain on the pillow she was using was blood. The FBI and two investigators from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children joined the search Tuesday. Police aided by helicopters and dogs scoured the neighborhoods near the home. The search teams planned to concentrate on a park near the home before a snowstorm later Tuesday, police spokesman Steve Frady said. Family members Monday night pleaded for help and her safe return. They described Denison as caring and responsible. “It gives us a little bit of fear because that is the type of person Brianna is; she would be contacting us if she could,” her aunt, Lauren Denison, told reporters Monday night. Denison is a psychology student at Santa Barbara City College in Santa Barbara, Calif., and was back in her hometown of Reno for winter break. In the hours before her disappearance, Denison had been party-hopping at venues associated with a weekend snowboarding event, including attending a rap concert at the Sands Hotel and Casino. Investigators want to talk to a man who dropped off a friend of Denison’s at the home that night, police Lt. Robert McDonald said. The friend had approached the man at the casino for a ride after the concert, but the man did not go inside the home, he said. The man is not a suspect but is being sought for questioning. Denison’s friend, K.T. Hunter, told the Reno Gazette-Journal that the couch is against the wall of the bedroom where she was sleeping with her dog. She said that she never heard a noise and that the dog never barked. Hunter said Denison was sober the night she vanished and had planned to pack Monday to go back to Santa Barbara. Reno police Tuesday also said there doesn’t appear to be a connection between Denison’s disappearance and separate attacks late last year on two female students near the University of Nevada, Reno.

CNN also had a story up on it this afternoon, but nothing really new.

Thanks to the Jawa Report I found that the Reno Police also has a website for their hotline. They also have a link for the Facebook Group above.

Updated 1-23-08 9:35 p.m. – I just saw over at CNN that the grand jury will be meeting on Thursday to consider what charges to file against Cesar Laurean for murdering Maria Lauterbach and burying her burned body in his back yard.

The 18 member grand jury is being called back for a special session tomorrow at 9 a.m. by Onslow County prosecutor Dewey Hudson. Other than murder, he wouldn’t specify what other charges might be on the table.

There will be an 11 a.m. news conference following the special session to announce the grand jury’s decision.

NCIS released a statement this afternoon saying that the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology in Deleware had conducted another autopsy and the information would be released by the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office. Thus far they have not received it and the prosecutor is trying to get the results.

Law enforcement officials have confirmed now that Laurean traveled by bus to Mexico. He rode a bus form North Carolina to Houston, Texas where he caught another bus to San Luis Potosi Mexico, most likely arriving there on the Sunday after he fled.

Reports are out that the cousin of Cesar Laurean, the man sought in the brutal slaying of a pregnant marine in December, saw the man near Guadalajara Mexico a week ago. According to

Laurean told Ramirez that he was just passing through and was in the area with some buddies for a few days.
Since Laurean is in Mexico, Onslow County District Attorney Dewey Hudson will be taking the death penalty off the table if Cesar Laurean is captured there.. As has been reported on TV and all over the Internet, Mexico is a very strong opponent of the death penalty and the chances of having Mexico extradite him would be pretty slim if he were looking at death.

I had to agree not to seek the death penalty. My hands were tied if I wanted to bring him here to face murder charges. It was very frustrating and disappointing.
    Dewey Hudson

The FBI plans to distribute matchbooks of business cards with Cesar Laurean’s picture in Mexico. His wanted poster is now on the FBI’s Most Wanted list with a $25,000 reward.

While it’s still somewhat tenuous right now there are some similarities between the disappearance of 29-year-old Rossana Miliani in December 2005 and the deaths of Meredith Emerson and Cheryl Dunlap.

Rossana was last seen in Bryson City, North Carolina on December 7th 2005. A store clerk from Bryson City told a private investigator that Miliani came into her store with a white man in his 60s and appeared extremely nervous when they bought a backpack. She also rented a storage space there. The State Bureau of Investigation is considering the possibility of a connection but won’t comment any further.

Miliani had been vacationing in Cherokee, North Carolina at the time of her disappearance. She called her father on that day and had spoken of hiking the Appalachian Trail.

The 2nd white van belonging to Gary Michael Hilton has also been found. It had been abandoned on a road in White County and towed to a scrap-metal yard. Apparently the van has been stripped and is in bad shape but investigators will be processing it for evidence next week.

One bit of information I was unaware of is that Transylvania County Sheriff David Mahoney (where the Bryants disappeared/died) confirmed that the North Carolina license plate on the back of Hilton’s van when he was arrested had been stolen from a vehicle registered in Transylvania County.

1-22-08 Breaking News. Cesar Laurean has been sighted in Mexico.

Some newly released video shows Cesar Laurean buying shovels, paint, concrete blocks and a wheelbarrow at a Lowes Home Improvement Store two days after Maria Lauterbach was murdered. I don’t have a copy of it or a URL to post yet but most likely will on Saturday at some point. CNN got the video from America’s Most Wanted and are supposed to broadcast it during tonight’s Anderson Cooper 360.

The video shows Laurean shopping with a friend in the Lowes. Investigators say that they believe he was with someone at the store but won’t comment as to whom.

Here is a bit of the video in a report from the AP which also focuses on the media blitz that’s going on in the manhunt for Cesar Laurean.

What’s interesting is that the neighbors say that they watched Christina painting the inside of the house recently. According to investigators there are reports that she helped do some of the interior painting last month. She still hasn’t been charged in the case.

    What’s up with that?

The Onslow County Sheriff’s Department says that she is a cooperating witness but obviously she was obstructing justice and was an accomplice in the deal.

I wasn’t there so I just don’t know. Was he threatening his wife Christina with bodily harm? If he was on base working they certainly weren’t there together all of the time.

Police are now reporting that the have evidence which links Gary Michael Hilton to the murder of a North Carolina Couple. Investigators are not specifying what kind of evidence they have but it is enough to make them believe that Hilton is responsible for the murder of Irene Bryant and the presumed murder of her husband John, who has not yet been found.

Here’s what CNN has to say on the subject…

After the couple went for a hike in Pisgah National Forest, Irene Bryant’s body was found near the couple’s car. John Bryant’s body has not been found. “This investigation has resulted in the investigative team being able to establish a positive link between Gary Michael Hilton of Transylvania County and specifically to the case involving John and Irene Bryant,” Mahoney said at a brief news conference. No questions were taken at the briefing, and Mahoney said details on the timing or venue of criminal charges are not being revealed now in order to maintain the integrity of the case. Hilton also is under investigation in Florida.

You can read the whole story over at CNN.

I also received a link from a reader earlier today where this is quite a bit of information about the Cheryl Dunlap murder. I have not had much time to research it and as long as I don’t get called in to work tomorrow I will do some reading and post about it here.

1-22-08 Breaking News. Cesar Laurean has been sighted in Mexico.
Update 1-18-08 3:24 p.m. Police are saying that they have received a credible tip that Cesar Laurean may be out west according to Onslow County Sheriff’s Captain Rick Sutherlin. Since he is from the Las Vegas area, it’s entirely possible that he tried to go back home looking for some place to hide.
Police have also revised her date of death, stating that they believe Maria Lauterbach was killed on the day she disappeared, December 14th rather than the 15th as they had originally thought.

Updated 1-17-08 8:30 p.m. In an affidavit Christina Laurean has said that she was at a Christmas party the late afternoon and evening that Maria Lauterbach was murdered and that her husband did not attend the party.

North Carolina Third District Representative Walter Jones has written a letter to Mexican President Felipe Calderon urging him to use any means necessary to help U.S. law enforcement bring Corporal Laurean to justice. The contents of the letter are as follows:

    Dear President Felipe Calderon:

I am writing regarding the search for Cpl. Cesar Armando Laurean, the suspected murderer of U.S. Marine Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach and her unborn son.

On January 11, 2008, Cpl. Cesar Armando Laurean, 21, disappeared from his Jacksonville, North Carolina, home shortly before police discovered the charred remains of Marine Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach buried in his backyard. Lauterbach had previously accused Laurean of raping her, telling Marine officials she was pregnant with his child; she was eight months pregnant when she went missing in December 2007.

Federal authorities now believe that Laurean has fled to Mexico. I strongly urge you to use whatever resources available to you to locate and apprehend Laurean as quickly as possible.

Should Laurean be apprehended in Mexico, there is clear precedent, consistent with both U.S. and Mexican law, for extraditing Laurean back to the U.S. Once Laurean is apprehended, I ask that you work with U.S. authorities to come to an agreement that will ensure his swift return to the U.S.

The murders of Cpl. Maria Lauterbach and her unborn son cannot go unpunished. The victims, the Lauterbach family and the people of North Carolina demand that justice be served for this heinous and disturbing crime.

Again, I urge you to use all means necessary to assist U.S. authorities in bringing Laurean into custody and to justice.

Updated January 17th 3:59pm – A police affidavit shows that Cesar Laurean and his wife Christina consulted an attorney on January 9th, the day before he fled. The lawyer told Laurean that he could be facing the death penalty. The very next day he took off and his wife appeared at the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office with her attorney and a Sergeant from her former chain of command. At that time she gave police several notes she had found in the house from Cesar Laurean. According to prior reports I am wondering if perhaps he actually left earlier than his wife Christina has said. If he and his wife met with an attorney then that pretty much seals it that she knew of the murder and helped him plan his getaway. Did they set it up so that she turned over evidence in order to get out of charges? This at the very least makes her an accessory to the crime, even if after the fact, or perhaps she is just guilty of obstruction of justice.

Laurean has sent two letter to his wife since he fled, both postmarked from Houston, Texas.

Along with the affidavit there is a warrant to search Western Union records as well. Laurean and his wife Christina received a transfer of money between December 10th and January 12th. The affidavit doesn’t give any further details about the money transfer.

Authorities also discovered last week the weapon used to kill Maria Lauterbach but won’t disclose what that weapon is. According to ABC the Jacksonville Daily News has cited severeal sources that say it was a crowbar. It was handed over to police by a witness last week.

According to the Houston Chronicle, Christina Laurean did know about the death of Maria Lauterbach. Laurean told his wife that Lance Corporal Lauterbach visited their home on December 15th, told him that she planned to leave the area and demanded money. Laurean and Lauterbach bought a bus ticket for her to go to El Paso but he said that Lauterbach then returned to their hom and started to argue. That’s when she supposedly produced a knife and slit her own throat. We know that to not be true since he bashed her freaking head in.

Updated 8:38 p.m. – According to CNN a woman that used to work with Corporal Cesar Laurean said that he is extremely innovative and described ‘McGyver’ type skills (referring to the television show) and training that would enable him to survive and adapt to life on the run. The woman, who asked to remain anonymous, left the Marine Corps in December and described Laurean as well-trained to adapt to his situation. She also called Laurean quiet but social, with many friends who spoke often of his 18-month-old daughter.

She also said that she had been friends with Lauterbach for about four years and that they were employeed in the Personnel Department at Camp LeJeune.

The friend said that Lauterbach confided in her and told her she had consensual sex with Laurean and that a verbal argument had occurred and that the rape happened in Laurean’s office at Camp LeJeune.

The un-named woman also claims that Lauterbach told her that she was afraid of Laurean and HAD sought another protective order in September from her when the first one expired. She was also considering withdrawing the rape allegations because she felt that Marine Officials weren’t taking her seriously.

The woman also says that there is no way that Lauterbach and Laurean had a continuing relationship after the rape, which disputes what Marine officials are saying.

Randi Kaye from CNN interviewed her and the whole thing, as well as video, can be viewed at Anderson Cooper 360 blog.

Updated 7:20 p.m. – CNN has an update on their story:

Officials at the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City said a Spanish-language version of the FBI’s wanted poster on Laurean was being developed Wednesday and would be posted on the embassy Web site.

The officials are hoping local media outlets will pick up the poster and publish it. Anyone in Mexico with information is asked to contact the legal attache at the embassy, officials said.

Updated at 4:15 p.m. – According to WRAL out of North Carolina the FBI has said that they have tracked him as far as Texas and that regardless of my update below, he may actually have made it to Mexico. Authorities are not announcing how they tracked him to Texas or Mexico but agents have been dispatched to Mexico to try and find him. According to FBI Special Agent Richard Kolko “The FBI, working with our law enforcement partners suspect, but have not confirmed, that Cesar Laurean may have fled to Mexico. This is an ongoing matter and we will work with our law enforcement partners in Mexico to determine if he is there and if so, to locate and apprehend him”

Updated at 3:35 p.m. – The FBI now says that it is working with Mexican authorities to find and arrest Laurean if he is in Mexico. I just finished reading a couple of threads over at LeJeune Underground and I posted this over there: Although I have been posting the news on this, I honestly think that he’s still in the U.S. He is most likely somewhere in the southeast, particularly considering that he left his truck in the area. Either that means that he did catch the Greyhound, leading to the possibility that the ‘sighting’ in Louisiana was real, caught a ride from a friend (plenty of guys were coming home from MOS graduation. My son caught a bus Friday at the same station where Maria Lauterbach purchased her ticket) or is still in the area. I personally think he’s holed up in an empty apartment or barracks or has killed himself in remorse for the awful misdeeds he has done.

According to CNN the FBI now suspects that Cesar Laurean has fled to Mexico. Cesar is sought in connection with the murder of Maria Lauterbach, the eight-month-pregnant Marine enlisted who was missing back in December and finally found dead just last week. According to ABC News FBI agents and officials have leads indicating that he may have med it to Mexico.

At this point in time we strongly suspect but have not confirmed that Laurean fled to Mexico

Cesar Laurean is a naturalized U.S. Citizen who is a native of Guadalajara, Mexico. He lived in the Las Vegas area prior to joining the United States Marine Corps. Investigators are not ruling out the chance that he may still be in the United States but the FBI legal attaché at the U.S. Embassy in Mexico has been notified. He became a U.S. citizen in 2003.

It’s not currently known if Laurean kept his Mexican citizenship but he does apparently have family there.

His picture and an alert are currently posted on the FBI’s web site and electronic billboards are being rolled out all over the country. The FBI feels that if they can get as many people out here with their eyes open they have a much better chance to catch Laurean.

1-22-08 Breaking News. Cesar Laurean has been sighted in Mexico.

Updated 1-16-2008 11:25 p.m. – I have been watching some of the videos over at CNN and according to them, Laurean’s wife is not an ex-Marine, she is a current Marine and is still working on the base.

Also the Marine Corps is stating that they did indeed pass the information to Onslow County on December 19th, the day that she was reported missing.

Most of the news channels are now saying that the Marines dropped the ball, and should have been sharing information earlier. The thing is that they did stick with their normal policy. The girl was UA, as according to her note. As far as they knew she was AWOL and the guy involved in the rape case was still working and showing up for work when he should.

Here’s the timeline as far as I know it:

December 14th: Lauterbach speaks with her mother, who later revealed that she had a firm conversation with her daughter and told her she should put the baby up for adoption since she would not be able to care for it. This is also the day that she leaves a note for her roommate basically stating she is going UA. This is also the day that she purchased a bus ticket to El Paso.

December 19th: Lauterbach’s family reported her missing to Onslow County police. By this time she has most likely been dead for four days, since the 15th of December.

December 20th: Her cell phone was found on the side of the road near Camp LeJeune.

December 28th: Lauterbach (then dead for over a week) doesn’t show up for a scheduled prenatal. She was due to give birth on February 14th.

January 7th: Lauterbach’s car was found. Police say that it had been there since December 15th. That suprised me because as a manager for a restaurant, I would have had the damn thing towed after about three days, particularly during the busy Christmas season.

January 10th: Onslow County released documents suggesting that Lauterbach left willingly. Onslow County Sheriff Ed Brown pleads for her to come home on national TV and the main stream media was still assuming she was a lying little girl. Their stance has changed from “this chick has snakes in her head” to “the marine corps had fucked up” in the manner of a week. Whatever gives good ratings, right? Assholes.

January 11th: Ed Brown announces that Lauterbach is dead and buried and names Corporal Cesar Armando Laurean as the main suspect and the guy that raped her, not a superior officer as the media had initially suggested.

Laurean booked from Camp LeJeune at 4 a.m., before he was announced as a suspect. He had four hours head start. His wife apprached the police with the note at 8 a.m. Later that day they search the Laurean property, finding the cavity where Lauterbach was buried.

January 12th: Police dig up the remains of Lauterbach and the baby. An arrest warrant for Cesar Laurean is issued.

January 15th: The autopsy results are released showing the Lauterbach died from blunt force trauma to the head.

Updated 1-15-08 11:30 p.m. – According to the reporters at CNN Maria Lauterbach told victim’s advocates at Camp LeJeune that she didn’t feel threatened of unsafe being around Cesar Armando Laurean.

Gary Sokoloski, the Judge Advocate General Officer for the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force said that Corporal Laurean never violated the military protective order keeping him away from Lance Corporal Maria Lauterbach. I don’t know if that is true or not, but since it expired four months ago the point is kind of moot, but the military needs to spin it so that they don’t look like assholes either way.

Laurean continued to show up for several weeks after Lauterbach’s disappearance and has denied having had any type of sexual contact with her. Considering that he bashed her head in and cut her throat I think it’s pretty safe to say that he lied to military investigators on that account.

Police received a tip earlier this afternoon in Morrisville, North Carolina that led them to a hotel located there. Cesar Laurean’s black Dodge pickup was found at the Microtel Inn which is located across the highway from the Raleigh-Durham International Airport, on Airport Boulevard. Sherrie Joyner, the lady who works the front desk, said that Laurean never checked in.

On December 14th, which is the day that Maria Lauterbach disappeared, her roommate, Sgt. Durham, found a handwritten note that said,

I could not take this Marine Corps life anymore so I’m going away. Sorry for the inconvenience. Maria
    Maria Lauterbach

So far the handwriting appears to match Lauterbach’s. He noticed that her car and some of her personal items were gone. At that point he contacted her sister about the note and reported her absence to his superiors, believing that she had gone UA. The same day, an ATM camera caught her withdrawing $700 and she bought a one-way bus ticket to El Paso the next day. Perhaps she thought she was going to meet Laurean there?

According to Randi Kaye (Murdered Marine: You call this an investigation?) Onslow County Sheriff Ed Brown announced earlier today that he won’t be talking to the media anymore, at least until Cesar Laurean is caught. That is probably a good thing considering some of the statements I have heard.

    Randi asks this question:

Would it have saved Lauterbach’s life? Tough to say. But it certainly may have prevented this massive manhunt for the key suspect living just a few miles away from the Sheriff’s Department this whole time.

Considering that according to the autopsy results that say she died before her family ever even reported her missing, most likely it wouldn’t have helped them one iota.

I ran across this story at WRAL. Apparently Cesar Laurean was born in Mexico and is a naturalized American Citizen. Paul Ciccarelli, a special agent with NCIS is working with the Immigration Service, the U.S. Marshal’s Service and the FBI to determine if Laurean is headed for Mexico.

The Autopsy on the charred remains found behind Cesar Laurean is complete and as expected they are the remains of Marine Lance Corporal Maria Lauterbach, and she died from traumatic head injury due to blunt force trauma. Dr. Charles Garrett is the Onslow County medical examiner and made the announcement earlier today.

District Attorney Dewey Hudson announced the results of the autopsy but also said that some questions remain.

He did say that Lauterbach was eight months pregnant and that if her child had been born and then killed it would constitute another murder charge. I am not real sure what he means by that doublespeak. Either they aren’t charging Laurean with the second murder or they are conjecturing that the baby was born. Heck if I know. According to Yahoo! News detectives aren’t sure if she gave birth before her slaying or not. That pretty much puts the note about ‘suicide’ in the trash.

The FBI is ramping up their investigation and search for Cesar Armando Laurean and have pasted his face on electronic billboards all over the country.

A federal warrant was issued for his arrest last weekend and  there is a $25,000 reward being offered for information that leads to his capture.

America’s Most Wanted is also helping out and you can pass tips about Laurean at their web site.

The results of the autopsy show that Lauterbach was most likely killed on or around December 15th, four days before her family reported her missing to the police, which I am sure lets Sheriff Brown and his office breathe a great sigh of relief in that there was nothing they could have done to prevent her death.

Apparently the military protective order that I mentioned in an earlier post prevented Laurean from coming within 1000 feet of Lauterbach but the order expire back on September 24th.

an hourglass on the spider’s abdomen, on the other upper arm.
Remarks: Laurean is a United States citizen. He
is also a United States Marine Corps Corporal currently assigned to
Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Laurean may be driving a four-door 2004
Dodge Ram truck, black in color, displaying North Carolina license
    plate TRR1522.

Cesar Armando Laurean is wanted for his alleged involvement in the murder
of 20-year-old Maria Lauterbach, who was pregnant at the time of her murder.
Lauterbach was a United States Marine Corps Lance Corporal assigned to
Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. She had been missing since December 14,
2007. Charred remains have been recovered in a shallow grave in the backyard
of Laurean’s Jacksonville, North Carolina, residence. The remains are
believed to be those of Lauterbach and her unborn infant.

A state arrest warrant was issued on January 12, 2008, in Onslow County,
North Carolina, after Laurean was charged with murder. That same day,
Laurean was charged federally with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution
by the United States District Court, Eastern District of North Carolina,
Wilmington, North Carolina, and a federal warrant was issued for his arrest.

The FBI is offering a reward of up to $25,000 for information
leading to the location and arrest of Cesar Armando Laurean.

9:04 p.m. – I just don’t know about this Sheriff from North Carolina. At a news conference earlier today he now says that the search for Cesar Laurean is “Earthwide”. I am partial to a bit of exaggeration myself but there is a time to exaggerate and there’s a time not too. I would think that this is the latter.

The FBI is now offering a $25,000 reward to anyone that is able to provide information that leads to Laurean’s capture.

Sheriff Brown also said that even though he has committed a horrible crime, Laurean still has friends and is most likely receiving help from them in his hiding. He asks that if Laurean makes contact to please turn in Cesar Laurean.

In the below video, the relatives of Marine Corporal Cesar Laurean tell Julie Chen about the circumstances surrounding his disappearance.

7:47 p.m. – Apparently over the weekend investigators found Lance Corporal Maria Lauterbach’s ATM card at a Durham, North Carolina bus station and the pickup truck that belongs to Cesar Laurean was reported seen in the area. Police received several tips from people who reported seeing the truck.

Updated January 14th at 4:59 a.m. – after the supposed confirmed sighting that Sheriff Ed Brown in North Carolina announced on Sunday the 13th, now there is some doubt as to whether that is true or not.

Chief Deputy Charlie Caldwell of the Shreveport Marshal’s Office has told KSLA-TV that he doesn’t know of any evidence that Cesar Laurean was/is in Louisiana. According to Caldwell they have not had any confirmed sightings of Laurean.

Yesterday Sheriff Brown’s office reported that it had received numerous pieces of information that made them believe that were less than two hours behind Laurean. Later in the day the Sheriff changed that to not putting a timeline on it.

Laurean is from Nevada and is still believed to be driving a black Dodge pickup with North Carolina plates TRR-1522. They describe him as dangerous is cornered.

One thing that I find interesting is the fact that Naval investigators said that they didn’t consider Laurean a flight risk since it seemed that Laurean and pregnant marine Maria Lauterbach had carried on some sort of friendly relationship after she had filed the complaint against him and cited possible proof in the matter, yet Lauterbach’s family is 100% disagreeing and claims that Lauterbach had no relationship with him whatsoever, that she was being continually harassed by the Marines and nothing was being done. From my reading last night I learned that the Marine Corps had separated the two and also imposed a military protective order to keep Laurean away from her.

Not to bad-mouth the dead that can’t defend themselves but that does kind of bring us back to the statement her mother made prior to finding Lauterbach’s remains that she was a liar. For sure someone is lying here. Either Lauterbach lied to her parents about the Marines doing nothing or the Marines are lying and covering it up.

Is there the possibility that Laurean is telling the truth and that Lauterbach did cut her own throat in his house? The blood on his ceiling and walls certainly doesn’t mean that she didn’t. Is it possible that they can tell from the blood splatters where she was at the time? If you want to go even farther here, I guess it’s possible that she cut her own throat knowing that he would be implicated in the murder and he burned her body for the same reason.

It seems like this case is getting weirder and weirder all the time and before all is said and done I am sure to be surprised again.

Onslow County Sheriff confirmed reported sightings of Corporal Cesar Laurean at a Greyhound bus station in Shreveport Louisiana today.

We have agents on the ground there. At this time we have several witnesses that have been interviewed who validated that sighting
    Sheriff Ed Brown

He also reported that Marine Corporal Cesar Laurean was seen either on a bus or getting off a bus that was heading to Texas but warned that it doesn’t mean he was going in the same direction. He was alone when he was seen by a witness Saturday night.

cesar Sheriff Brown is confident that Laurean will be apprehended shortly and when questioned as to why he wasn’t arrested Saturday night Brown said that he was not sighted by law enforcement and that the general public needs to not try and detain him.

Shreveport police are cooperating with the United States Marshal’s Service and other law enforcement agencies to try and find Laurean. Federal officials have issued a fugitive warrant for his arrest.

The warrant charges Laurean with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution according to the FBI.

The Washington Post is apparently questioning the urgency of the search by law enforcement officials.

For months after a pregnant 20-year-old Marine accused a colleague of rape, her family says, she continued to work alongside her attacker and endured harassment at Camp Lejeune. In the weeks after she disappeared, they believe, the sheriff’s department was slow to act. As authorities recovered Maria Lauterbach’s remains Saturday from a fire pit where they suspect Marine Cpl. Cesar Armando Laurean burned and buried her body, her family asked why authorities didn’t treat her case with greater urgency.

I think that urgency may have been an issue when the investigation had to do with rape but this case has turned extremely ugly in the last few days and I don’t believe urgency is at issue here.
