Weekend Off

Damn. I am whooped. I had a half day off last Thursday, and prior to that I was off on Tuesday and Wednesday the 3rd and 4th. Too many days without a day off. Things at work are finally starting to come together though. I should have plenty of people by the time we open in ten days. I have unfortunately had to hire a few that I know I shouldn’t, just to have some warm bodies to open with. They will get weeded out pretty soon after we open.

I’m off this weekend though. My little brother and his spawn are going to be in town tonight. I am looking forward to that very much. My parents may be coming out tomorrow as well, for my daughter’s ninth birthday party. She’s pretty excited. I just wish I had a bit more dough to spend on her this year. She’ll never know the difference though and will have a great time. I think that about 30 people were invited, which means 15-20 will show. Should be fun. I will just have to make sure and get some beer on the way home tonight. For the kids, not for me of course.

Quicken

Finally got Quicken 2006 to install correctly and get my unlock code to work under Windows Vista. I have had some issues with getting it to run properly, and with the system crashes I was having my most recent backup is a couple of months old. Damn, have some updating of the old check book to do.

Now if I could only get my hotsync to work properly, I prefer to use my iPaq as my register rather than having to write it down and transfer to my PC later.

Blood Mountain

The Grey Biker’s post about a camping trip I made with my son a few years back. I couldn’t remember if I had told this story before and can’t find it in my archives, so here it is.

As a child I was very active. I enjoyed being outside and particularly loved camping, and hiking and all sorts of outdoor activities. I was active in the Boy Scouts and even into my teen years full of drugs and partying, I would still go hiking. I was in pretty good shape and walked everywhere I went even into my early twenties. Hell, I never even bothered to get a driver’s license until I was 21. I rode the bus, rode the subway, and walked everywhere.

As I get older I remember this with a fondness that grows more as I get older. I probably didn’t have as much fun as I think I did. So a few years ago, I think Chris was probably eight or nine, we decided to go on a hiking trip up to Blood Mountain. It’s not too bad. If I remember correctly, it’s maybe three miles from the highway up to the top. We started out fairly early in the day. Since Chris was still pretty young, I ended up carrying most of the stuff. Fuck. It took most of the day to get there. I was wheezing and hacking the entire day and pissed off, and just wanted to get to the top to get it over with. Once I got there, we got camp set up, cooked dinner, and set up the tent. It was fucking cold and I had not brought enough blankets. We were both miserable as hell. I was never happier to get the fuck off that mountain.

It IS beautiful up there though. I love the mountains. Just have to remember that I don’t like hiking as much as I thought I did. Day hikes are OK, but packing in all that crap is just not for me anymore. I like my comforts and conveniences too much.

Lazy Day

Spent most of the day fooling around. I flushed everyting on my son’s hard drive and did a reinstall of the OS, spent some time messing around with SMS and WAP trying to get my sell phone to access my HA server. Slept till 10am, that was nice. Had to get my brakes fixed. They were so bad had to get the front rotors replaced. Quick $289 spent on that. Got an oil change as well, probably going out of town on my vacation next week.
I signed up for mobile web on my cell phone, but the damn thing won’t let me access it. Pissed off about that. I am able to send an receive sms messages, but that is it. For a short time I was able to access the web. Got to my main page, as well as the blog but can’t get to the damn HA server, which is really all I want to access from it. Possibly because it is on a different port than 80. I also want to be able to post to the blog from my cell, but will wait to tackle that one until my next two days off, possibly my vacation.

Voted today, but not in either primary. Fuck them. The only other thing on the ballot is Georgia’s current flag referendum. The old flag is not on it, just the one from 2000 (or 2001), and the one that the general assembly picked last year. I voted for it because it seems like the least time-consuming and financial. It’s already all over the place, why keep fucking with something that wasn’t broke to begin with.
