Wednesday Hero

This Week’s Soldier Was Suggested By Gary

Col. James W. Harrison Jr.

Col. James W. Harrison Jr. 47 years old from Missouri U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, Combined Forces Command Afghanistan May 6, 2007  Duty, Honor, Country. Col. James Harrison Jr. embodied that ethos, said his family. He was committed to the mission of the United States in Afghanistan and spoke with great pride about the accomplishments of the men and women with which he served Col. Harrison was killed on May 6 when a Taliban fighter, dressed as an Afghan police officer, shot him at point blank range at Pul-e-Charkhi prison near Kabul. Also killed along side Col. Harrison was Master Sgt. Wilberto Sabalu Jr. and two other soldiers were wounded. All four men were working as mentors to Afghan troops providing external security for the prison. Harrison graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1981. He also graduated from the Military Police Basic and Advanced courses, the Combined Arms and Services Staff School, the Command and General Staff College, the Army Inspector General Course, and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces. He earned a Master of Business Administration from Syracuse University and a Master of Science degree in national security and strategic studies from the National Defense University. Before going to Afghanistan in December 2006, he was assigned to Fort Leavenworth as director of the School for Command Preparation at the Command and General Staff College. He is survived by his wife and three sons. To read a letter from the Afghan general in charge of the detention facility, visit Amy Proctor’s site.

Naked Man Tasered…

I came across this story courtesy of Fark. Apparently this guy in Spokane decided to run around his back yard naked waving his pistol around (his weapon, not his gun) and the Sheriff’s deputies tasered his crazy ass. What’s this country coming to when you can’t run around naked with guns in your own back yard? That ruins my plans for tomorrow.

Lt. Earl Howerton says when deputies arrived about 5:10 p.m., Raymond S. Wheatly was “definitely acting weird” and probably high or intoxicated. Howerton says the 39-year-old Wheatley was in his backyard still holding one gun.

Howerton says within eight minutes, the deputies persuaded Wheatly to drop the weapon, then they shocked him with a Taser. Howerton says Wheatly stood up and fought back as deputies tackled him.

Yuh think?

Global Warming?

The older I get the more I discover that I am starting to like warm places more and more.

In Memory Of Shithead…

I ran across this over at Adeline and Hazel’s place and just had to post it.

2:08 PM

That’s what time I got out of work this afternoon. It is probably the earliest I managed to get home since I was a store manager. Very nice. The only bad part is that it is right at 100 degrees out so that ride home in my no-air car sucked. I had to go pick the girls up from the baby sitter as we have open house in an hour or so, then the wife has to go back to work for HER open house.

Looks to be a long evening…

I am so ready for fall to get here.

Now Here’s A Sport I Could Get Into…

Just need a few beers in a cooler and I would be good to go. Hell, as hot as it has been in that stupid car with no air the last couple of weeks I think I could kick all their asses.

Mutual Fund Managers

TheBuyList.com has much needed information for those of us that like to invest in mutual funds. More than 50% of common stock in the U.S. is currently owned by pension funds and mutual funds. With the exception to the privately held stock I have in my company all of my investments in the stock market are through mutual funds, as is some of my wife’s retirement funds. They also account for over 80% of all of the daily trading activity on the stock market as well.

One way to research stocks and see which funds and managers are buying what is to go through each mutual fund’s periodic SEC filings, to see what was added since the last filing but that is fairly time and labor intensive. There is a much easier way. TheButList.com does all of the work for you and posts the results on the Internet for the investment community to peruse.

Early Day For A Change…

At least lately it is. I have a manager off today but I was still able to get out of there by about a quarter till three. Try as I might to get out the door by two something seems to come up to hold me around. The store was a little better than it has been for the last three months, mainly because I spent so much time there while the dude was on vacation last week. I still had to go in and clean up his nasty mess behind him but it was a slight improvement.

I also spent about half the morning helping out another district manager whose store manager decided to get drunk and not show up for work until ten this morning (four hours late). It could have been worse I suppose. It’s one of my old stores so I got some folks in there to take care of the restaurant and made it back to my own little hell hole in time to get some of my stuff finished.

Microsoft Software

Costcaptain.com is a Microsoft Authorized Education Reseller. The way I originally came across the sponsor of this post is doing a search for online resellers for Microsoft Office 2007. One thing the laptop doesn’t have on it right now is an office suite. If I can find it I have Office 2000 somewhere and that will work, but if I recall one of the CDs is damaged. The wife and boy definitely need Office on there and I admit I wouldn’t mind having it as well. I had toyed with the idea of OpenOffice but I have tried it and I just don’t like it as well as Microsoft Office. It’s still the best at what it’s for, at least in my opinion.

CostCaptain has some pretty good prices as well. Prices start at $129 with academic discounts  and since the wife is a teacher that works great for us. I just have to send them proof of academic eligibility after buying the software. They also sell gift certificates as well, which is pretty cool with school starting back up.
