Beaufort

We’ve been here for about 30 minutes now and everyone’s safely tucked in bed, even the wife. Just as soon as I post this I am at least going to try and hit the sack. We are planning on being up around 5:30 so I need to get at least a little bit of shut-eye. We are staying right on Bay Street and from what I could see in the dark it’s beautiful. Planning on taking a bunch of photos tomorrow and if there is time I will upload them tomorrow afternoon. Blogging will be somewhat sparse during the day except for the occasional twitter or maybe if I take a few shots on my cell phone and send them via flickr.

Family Day on the base is tomorrow and we are planning on spending most of the day there. The base opens at 7 AM and we have to leave at 7 PM so unless the girls are complete buttheads we will spend the entire time there. My parents checked in earlier this afternoon and will be with us tomorrow and my brother’s family is going to drive down tomorrow night and be at graduation. They are crazy. I am too old for that shit and what little sleep I do actually get I value too much to drive all night, stay awake for something half the day and then drive back home (to Carey North Carolina) right after it’s over.

Hometown Wednesday Hero

I wrote a couple of days ago about the lady that my wife works with and her son who was killed in action. I saw the report in our local newspaper, and here is his obituary…

MICHAEL HARDEGREE
Sgt. Michael Christopher Hardegree, 21, of Villa Rica was killed in action Monday, Sept. 10, 2007, in Iraq while serving his country in the 82nd Airborne Division of the United States Army.
Funeral arrangements were incomplete and will be announced later by J. Collins Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Villa Rica.
A complete obituary will be published later.
To send condolences to the family, visit www.jcollinsfuneralhome.com.

Apparently it will be five to seven days before she gets his body back home. That’s actually much faster than I thought the Army could move, but I know this is just a terrible wait for his parents.

Ride The Lightning

Tennessee executed convicted murdered Daryl Horton this morning, becoming the first inmate to be electrocuted in the state since 1960. Horton lined his three sons and their half-sister up in his uncles auto repair garage in 1997 and shot them with a rifle because his wife wouldn’t let him see them. He said that he had planned on killing his wife and himself but he turned himself in instead.

Burn in hell dude…

Job Hunting…

Saturday we are going to visit out friend in Hilton Head with the boy after he graduates. She and most of her kids will be moving to Cyprus as soon as she can get her house and business sold and this very well may be the last time we get to see them. The eldest daughter has already moved, but she is going to art school in England, living with relatives there I suppose. Not that she is settled in I’m sure she’s looking for jobs in London so that she can support herself as quickly as possible. She’s quite a good artist but London jobs are not that easy to come by. It’s probably a good thing they are from England, at least she has family there that can help out until she is gainfully employed.
I hate job hunting. The last time I was seriously looking for a new one was when I thought I was leaving my company to do something else back in 2000. It ended up that my company offered a job in IT so that I could stay with them and eventually I did get back into the operations management end of things. I think that I would not like to be looking for a job in London right now. I don’t know what the unemployment rate is over there but I am sure that it is higher than where I am at.

Mormons and Tigers and Bears, Oh My…

I was reading this article over at CNN earlier and was just revolted. Sara Hammon makes a point in her interview with CNN that Warren Jeffs is just a fall guy and that someone else will always be there to take his place and that is very true. I don’t really have a problem with people that believe in Polygamy…that’s not the issue for me. If you can have a healthy relationship it doesn’t matter if it’s with one or ten people…The government shouldn’t have any say over who is in a relationship with whom. It’s just flat out none of their damn business.

For me the issue is all about mind control that is so prevalent in most religions , along with the physical and sexual abuse that goes on in some of them. I’m not leaving the mainstream religions out of it either because although they may be more ‘mainstream’ and law abiding in the end it’s all about brainwashing and control.

Wednesday Hero

Staff Sgt. Richard P. Ramey
Staff Sgt. Richard P. Ramey
27 years old from Canton, Ohio
703rd Ordinance Compan, supporting the 82nd Airborne Division
February 8, 2004

Richard Ramey always knew what he was going to be. Once, while in the third grade, his teacher asked him what he wanted to do when he grew up. His response? “I’ll go to war and fight” Concerned by his answer, his teacher called his mother, Julie Ramey. She told her “No, that’s my son”.
SSgt. Ramey was killed when insurgents attacked his and other convoys in Mahmudiyah, Iraq.
“Richard loved to do his job. No matter where it would take him,” said his mother. “He really felt deeply that he wanted to protect people that couldn’t protect themselves”
In a statement released through Fort Knox, the Ramey family said, “He was adventurous and smart, combining both qualities in what he did for the Army. We knew his work was dangerous but also knew he wouldn’t have wanted to do anything else”.

These brave men and women sacrifice so much in their lives so that others may enjoy the freedoms we get to enjoy everyday. For that, I am proud to call them Hero.
We Should Not Only Mourn These Men And Women Who Died, We Should Also Thank God That Such People Lived

Breaking News – Earthquakes in Indonesia

According to CNN two powerful earthquakes have been reported in Indonesia with preliminary magnitudes of 7.8 and 8.0 and a Tsunami alert has been issued.

A strong earthquake measuring up to 8.0 in magnitude struck Wednesday near southern Indonesia, the U.S. Geological Survey said.
A tsunami watch was immediately issued for the area.
The earthquake, which struck Sumatra, has caused buildings to sway in Indonesia’s capital city, Jakarta, the Associated Press reported.

Yahoo has a news report up now saying that the U.S. Geological Survey has reported ONE quake that measured a magnitude of 7.9 and was centered 9.7 miles underground in the southern Sumatra area.

Earthquakes of this size have the potential to generate a widespread destructive tsunami that can affect coastlines across the entire Indian Ocean Basin
U.S.G.S.

I will post more information when I get it.

Now THAT Was Long…

That too but I was mainly referring to yesterday. I ended up not getting home from work until Ten last night. The meeting at the convention center lasted more than two hours yesterday. I think we finally got out of there around Six Thirty last night. About ten of us stopped for supper at this place called Johnny Carino’s Country Italian. I’ve had better Italian but it was pretty good. The waiter was good and handled us very well. Most of the time that you get a large party together like that they have a hard time and end up doing a really good job or they just suck, particularly considering that all ten of us work in the restaurant industry and that makes us a pain in the ass to wait on.

Apparently my VP and another one from out toward Kennesaw were in one of my restaurants yesterday trying to talk one of my managers into moving to a store out that way. It’s my guy that I have such a hard time with. The problem is that I did some checking around and the girl they want to replace him with is worse. Crap. I asked both of my other managers to put a bug in his ear that he doesn’t want to leave. Lesser of two evils and all that stuff.

I picked up the minivan we have rented for the week yesterday afternoon. I will have to go pay them a visit again this morning. The email I got after reserving the damn thing gave me a quote of just under $300 for the week, but I ended up getting charged just over $400. I did choose the extra insurance this time for some reason but that only adds $8 a day so I don’t know how they pulled another $75 out of there ass on this one. Once I wake up a bit more I’ll check the contract and see what they charged me.

Where Does The Time Go?

I think I found exactly what I need to get for the older girl for stocking stuffers this year. She recently got her ears re-pierced and has been doing a pretty good job at taking care of them, so I am sure that we will get her some ear-rings, particularly since she has started looking at jewelry lately. I thought about getting her some animal jewelry. She’s not at the age yet where I have to get extremely expensive stuff so that would be perfect for her. I still have a little time before I have to start worrying about it but I do need to shop for her birthday since it’s at the end of next month. Ten-years-old. A decade. Sure doesn’t seem like that long.
