PC Stuff

I know I have been pretty quiet the last couple of weeks. I have to go back to work today after my two days off. I ended up working somewhere around 70 hours or so this week, and most of my off time was spent working on PCs, a few of mine, and a couple for other people.

I’ve spent the better part of the last 24 hours in a data recovery “operation” trying to pull some movies and pictures off of a defunt NTFS drive, and finally have had good results with it this morning. Couple with the fact that I am using Stephanie’s computer to post, things are going a much more smoothly than they were. It’s not that I don’t like my laptop, but it is slow and a bit of a pain in the ass. I am used to being able to have six or eight programs open, with it, I have to stick with one, maybe two, or it starts to crawl.

I actually have lot’s of stuff to write down, but no time today. Maybe I will have some time this afternoon. The next few days at work don’t look to be any easier than the last few before my days off. Right now I am just looking forward to September 8th. Another vacation. Having taken my last one so early in the fiscal year, I should be able to sneak an extra one in this year, which will be nice.

Next Tuesday though, is the Queensryche concert, that will be cool. We are taking Christopher to his first concert. I am sure that he would like it to be someone much more cool from this decade, but I am pretty sure that he will have a good time. I have managed to “infect” him with a liking for classic rock and metal, which is definately a good thing considering some of the music coming out now.

Laptop Blogging

Maybe I will just start using my ipaq to blog with. This thing is ok for balancing the checkbook, and checking my email, but otherwise it is a big pitfa.

Catfish suggested that I add a PC to my santa list, which I may just do. Hopefully I will have something built in the next few weeks though. I probably have enough parts to build a couple of computers left over from repairing my media server, just not quite as fast as the last one. That’s ok though. Better than this.

I was visiting some sites on my blogroll a little while ago when firefox crashed for the 3rd time tonight. fuck it, I think it’s time to work on another PC I am supposed to fix for someone anyway.

Technorati :

Technology has failed me again

Actually it hasn’t failed so much as sputtered to a halt. My damn HTPC, through which 90% of the media in my household flows through, and my home automation software runs on, AND acts as my tivo, DVD player, etc…has been crapping out lately. I may have a heat problem, or the CPU may be going bad. Not sure yet. I am going to back up all of my info from my PC which is the fastest in the house, and make IT the media center over the next few days. Now that I am used to being able to record unlimited amounts of movies and TV (limited only be hard drive space) and pause, rewind, etc, I really miss it when it is not available. I have a slow as crap laptop that my dad gave us for Chris to use for homework, but he doesn’t use it, so I shall start. I’ve taken it with me on my last couple of trips, and even though it is slow as shit, it’ll do me fine for blogging, balancing the checkbook, and surfing the web. Hopefully the money situation will get better by Christmas or early next spring and I can build myself a new one. A goddamn behemoth faster than fucking light computer.

Posting from my iPaq…

…while dinner is on the stove got me to thinking about how pissed off I am right now at Handango. If you are not familiar with them, they provide a central location for the downloading and purchase of software for handhelds.
Since I cannot sync my ipaq and PC, but my wife wants something called Sodoku, I figured that I would download a demo or purchase it straight from the ipaq. You can no longer access the site, at least with this one. I was forced to download a catalog app and use it. It won’t let me download demos, only have the option to purchase. Ok, tried that and it tells me the file cannot be found on the server. Six different apps and I get the same message. Fuck you Handango.

Just some general web surfing bullshit

At least the US is being straightforward and honest when we didn’t sign the Kyoto treaty, unlike most of the participating countries. Thanks, LL. I also came across an almost unbelievable article about a guy who called in with a dead family member, more than once (and the KID wasn’t dead). Fucker.

Mel Gibson apologizes to the Jews.

Read about the Hit-and-Run Grannies. I know that this is pretty serious and all, but for some reason I am laughing my ass off.

I admit it. I am a big Harry Potter fan. I am eagerly awaiting the last book in the series. I am certainly not a literary critic, but I have been reading SciFi and Fantasy novels since I was five and have always been in love with them. Stephen King, John Irving, and J.K. Rowling got together for a charity fund-raiser and there is a bit of discussion about the final book here

What a fucking maroon..When showing your stolen ID, make sure that the person you are showing it to doesn’t resemble the picture (or have the same name).

AOL finally has a beta version that work under Windows Vista. Good deal. Yeah, I still have AOL. I use the excuse that my account is my grandmother’s only internet access (which is true), but the real deal is that I have had the same email account for 14 years. I use it for 95% of any transactions I make on the internet, and am loathe to give it up. I did read over at CNN the other day that Time-Warner is considering making their aol.com email addresses free, which would be nice. I might have to set up my grandmother with something else, but then again, maybe I will just keep paying for it.

Another article about Castro is here. Nothing new, I guess they are just trying to keep it alive in the news cycle. What I found interesting is that when all this was announced, President Bush was in Miami to talk about the US economy. The US Mission in Cuba finally got power back today after not having it since June 5th. Damn, and I thought I was hot after driving for 20 minutes. Redstate and Val Prieto comment on the fact that the announcement was made AFTER the surgery, not before. Hadn’t thought about that yet, but it’s possible that Castro is in really bad shape or we might never have even known.

Is there anyone out there that does not know to BLOW OUT THE FUCKING FIRE before drinking flaming alcohol? Apparently this stupid bitch doesn’t and is suing Bacardi as a result. Snakes.

Here’s and article about Metallica finally allowing some of their music to be sold on iTunes. It mentions the fact that The Beatles and Led Zeppelin still aren’t being sold, but doesn’t say anything about the other holdout that I would love to see, AC/DC.

I have a lot of respect for Jimmy Carter as a great humanitarian, but he was a terrible president, and he still doesn’t have a clue about politics, particularly politics in the Middle East. His article for the Washington Post “Stop the Band-Aid Treatment” can be found at the link. He has some good points but the fact is that Hezbollah is hiding among the civilian population of Lebanon and Israel is defending itself. It is a tragedy and unfortunate that civilians are being killed, but if Britain or the US had turned pussy during WWII and NOT fire bombed Dresden, or we had not nuked japan, the war would NOT have stopped as fast and the casualties would have been much worse. I would love to see all of the current conflicts stopped without any further death, innocent or otherwise, but it ain’t gonna happen.

Elisson decided to post a picture from the Vman’s recent vacation. WARNING -DON’T click if you have eaten recently.

That’s enough for now. Chris and Stephanie are both at work until after 9pm, so I need to get off my ass and fix the girls something to eat. I did have my employee meeting this afternoon and may post a bit about it later.

Oops. Fucked up my tags and had to repost.

Quicken

Finally got Quicken 2006 to install correctly and get my unlock code to work under Windows Vista. I have had some issues with getting it to run properly, and with the system crashes I was having my most recent backup is a couple of months old. Damn, have some updating of the old check book to do.

Now if I could only get my hotsync to work properly, I prefer to use my iPaq as my register rather than having to write it down and transfer to my PC later.

Amazon Groceries

I didn’t even know they were doing it until I saw a link over at instapundit but Amazon.com has gotten into the online grocery business. I have always liked the idea, but living in eastbumblefuck as I do figured I would never have to worry about trying it.

I made a quick run through, and the prices are reasonable, particularly for a lazy ass geek like me. Most of the stuff is in bulk, so if you only go shopping once every couple of weeks or month like I do, it’s even better. I may have to try it out. As Instapundit says, if anyone can make it work, Amazon can.

Downtime

I don’t know what it is but I have been having intermittent downtime off and on for a couple of weeks. It is starting to get really irritating and makes me want to bash my head against the monitor, but since lightning took out my flat panel, this is the only one left. Damn it.

DDOS Attacks

Fucking assholes. Got up about 30 or 40 minutes ago, tried to access my site. No go. I finally checked via IP address and did a bit of troubleshooting, and sure enough, it’s down. Sent an email to tech support, and they replied back within a couple of minutes. Apparently it’s DDOS attacks. Damn, must be Hezbollah trying to keep down my poignant wit, or trolls that don’t want you to read my intelligent commentary, or maybe right-wing, ultra-conservative, blue hairs that just don’t like the word fuck. Well, FUCK YOU then.

I have been pretty lucky. I have never seen much downtime with my current provider. Hell, I had more down time when I hosted it via the server in my basement, which is why I moved it offline.

Fine, I posted at MySpace. Then again if I am able to post this it means that my site is back up and the point is moot.

It’s 6:20am now, and the site is back up. Good deal.

Spell Check

Zoundry has apparently updated the blog posting software that I use, now there is a spell checker. Good damn thing. Hell, it might have always been there but I haven’t seen it.

I think I am going to go outside for a nice smoke, then kick the girls out of my bedroom and hit the sack.
