A little Irish..

…at least for the evening. Saint Patrick’s Day is almost over and I am sitting here while everyone else is out drinking green beer and having a good old time. The wife is asleep and the girls are getting ready for bed, so I decided to search for Irish themed stuff. I came across a place called Celtic Hills that sells irish gifts. I found this cool wall cross there.

There is a bunch of other cool stuff over there to check out. Lots of jewelry and gift items. The last time (or maybe the time before) that the wife and I went to the Renaissance Festival south of Atlanta we picked up a couple of really nice silver wedding/anniversary rings that looked like a Celtic knot. I like jewelry in that vein and they have several crosses and pendants that I might enjoy having.

Back to web surfing now.

Memory Upgrade

I have right at a gig of computer memory in my PC, but since I have upgraded to Windows Vista I have been considering getting at least another gig (at least). Memory Store has some decent prices and a decent selection, so that is more than likely where I will get it. When I worked in Norcross I used to buy everything locally, as there are a few stores near our corporate office that carried everything I need at a cheap price. Since I am back in the restaurants again, I usually get everything online. I try to shop around so with memory I go to the Memory Store for my computer memory.

What’s really cool is that they have a memory detection module that will detect your motherboard type, filled slots, and all the other info. Not sure but it probably uses Windows WMI information. I know it works for me great. I have four slots in my PC, and they support up to eight gigs of memory.

I found a 1 gig Abit module (my motherboard is a UL8) for $99. I am thinking about going ahead and biting the bullet to get four of them. Four gigs of memory should do me for a couple of years before I need another upgrade. By then I will be ready to replace the entire thing anyway.

1st Annual Beerbecue

I have sent this email to several people already, if you haven’t gotten it either I don’t have your email address or just plain forgot. It’s not personal. If you email or call me after reading this well then maybe it will be personal 🙂

Since I schedule all of my vacations a year in advance it is difficult for me to get together with folks at the various blogmeets, so we are having a big ass barbecue and party on March 31st. We’ll get started at or around 4 PM on that Saturday. There are a few extra beds, and there are hotels and motels in the area. If you are interested in coming, either call me or shoot me an email at rmiles7721 at gmail dot com or rm_blogger at yahoo dot com.

If I know you personally or have met you then you are invited, if not then you are probably invited anyway unless you are some sort of weird stalker in which case we will cut you up and bury you in the back yard with various cats and squirrels and former employees of mine.

The location is at my house in Temple Georgia. Bring your favorite side dish and/or alcohol or bring nothing at all it doesn’t matter. We’ll be doing burgers, dogs, and beer so if there is something in particular that you want that doesn’t fit that list you need to bring it.

So That's Where the Coke Stash Goes…

This guy hid 25 vials of cocaine and a crack rock in his six year old’s jacket, then tried to go to the school to get it back. Not cool. Don’t you know it’s supposed to go in their book bag?

Another Little Web Gadget…

…and this one’s for your cell phone or MySpace blog. U-Doo is a personalized ringtone thing that you create and download to your phone and/or to your myspace blog. It is an animated avatar that also speaks. It allows you to build a custom avatar, select a message from either one that you record on your phone, via using text to speech, or there are several prerecorded ones to choose from.

I got this cool little skeleton thing over at my MySpace page with a very short text to speech message. I created it in a minute or so, and then told it to upload to my myspace page and it was done about 30 seconds later. Very quick, and it pops it in the ‘about me’ box.

It also allows you to email it to someone else (or yourself). I did this as well, and after I told my webmail provider that mail from myself was not spam 🙂 I received it in my mail client. It emails a link to the web page for you or your friends to check out.

U-Doo is available free for your web page or via email, and is offered as a subscription service through cell phone providers for a 60 day free trial, and then it’s $4.99 a month after that.

The Weekend is Upon Us

I actually have managed to get the weekend off for a change. The Boy has to work in the morning, so I will more than likely have to be back up about 6:30 or around then to take him in and then hopefully I can go back to bed for awhile. I am having trouble getting to sleep. Considering that I have been up for about 20 hours now I am surprised. The wife may just end up having to take him in the morning.

Pappilon just ended. That was really good. I will most definitely do as I said earlier and rent it. I would like to see it again at least once. There are some parts that I missed, particularly at the beginning that I want to see.

The Battle of the Blogs is almost over. SWG is only four votes behind the leader, so if you haven’t had the chance to vote for him head on over to Leesa’s Stories and vote. Then hang out for awhile.

Still Awake…

…and I don’t know why. I have been surfing the web aimlessly as I watch Papillon. Steve McQueen kicked serious ass. He’s always been one of my favorite actors and for some reason I have never seen this before. A Damn good movie I must say, with a capital D.

I started watching it shortly after I got home and thought it was almost over. Here it is two hours later and still going. I think I may have to rent it so that I can see the parts that I missed.

I only ended up working until about 10:30 tonight, so I guess it could have been worse. I have about half of my night shift terrified that I am going to fire them now, so hopefully I will get most of my money in the cash register tonight.

Ryche Desktop theme

My MOST downloaded skin (at 12000+ downloads) is Ryche. It also happens to be the most simple, but offers the most screen real estate. I did it in honor of the band Queensryche, the “thinking man’s heavy metal band”. Animated icons, band related sounds. Other than that it was a pretty simple theme. CPU monitor, clock, shadowed icons. Nothing spectacular, but definitely the most popular one.

Gatekeeper DesktopX Skin

Another one of my favorite skins that needs to be updated is my Gatekeeper theme for Desktopx. I ported this with permission from a skin for the Explorer replacement called Talisman. It has areas that are animated, and is just a pretty darn cool skin. That’s one of the reasons I ported it for use. It’s also my second most highly downloaded skin.

All of the little knobs and doodads in the lower left are switches that open little windows just to the right with menus inside. That’s the start menu replacement. There are some other animated areas as well.

I did this one in September of 2000, so it is in desperate need of an update.

Ganymede Windowblinds

I am considering updating my port of the Ganymede Enlightenment theme. I originally did this one for Windowblinds and DesktopX (as well as a few other skinnable apps) back in 2000 and updated it on 2001. Over the last six years, Windows has come a long way, as have video cards, and the programs that use them. Here is a screenshot of it:

Hard to believe that is Windows. I originally did it under Windows 2000, although by then I was probably running XP beta. It’s been awhile so I am not really sure. I may take some time to update all of my skins at that time. I have gotten a bit better with Photoshop since then, and there is a lot more stuff that can be done with anti-aliasing and transparency. All of my skins are up for download at http://dethnite.wincustomize.com/ and http://dethnite.deviantart.com.
